Brannock Sizing Advice

I recently went to Nordstrom and I got my foot sized on a Brannock. In the pics it shows my right foot to be just above/at a 9.5AA and my left foot slightly less than/at a 9.5AA. I recently bought a pair of 9.5D Alden/Brooks Brothers loafers off Grailed (Which used the Aberdeen last). And I found them to be too narrow. Before I bought them I researched, and I found this last fit more TTS

I'm confused how I measured to be a AA width, but yet a D width was too narrow. Based on the pics of the Brannock would I be more of a 10, or possibly even a 10.5? I've been researching how the Brannock works but I'm still unsure about it all. Hope someone can help

Did you measure yourself on the Brannock or did a salesperson measure you?

Notice that for the width measurement you have to read the width off the size number, as shoe width labeling is relative to length, not an absolute measurement. If you think about it, a size 9D foot has to be narrower in absolute terms than a size 12D foot but both are 'medium' width relatively speaking. So looking at the photo of your right foot, if you're a 9.5 in heel-toe length you are actually an E width. Also notice that your arch length looks to be a bit longer (10) than your heel-toe length (9.5).

I didn't realize you had to read it based off your length measurement, I thought it was based on where the metal slider sits. I was first measured by someone else, but I went back to take these pictures, otherwise it was the same measurement. So based on the information you gave me I'm about a 9.5E (heel to toe)? And I'm a 10E based on the heel to ball measurement? Which size should I go off of from this?

So after looking at the pictures more and doing a little more research, I should go off of the bigger size, in this case it's my heel to ball measurement. So based off of that, I'm more of a 10.5D? Please correct me if I'm wrong!

You may be able to wear 10D/E in some lasts. Not sure whether 10.5 will be too long. I would use the Brannock as a starting point. The trick is that you may be one size in one last and another in a different last. If you're buying shoes online, it is very important to find out your size in one or more common lasts. In the US I would find out your size in the Allen Edmonds Park Avenue model on the 65 last. Try 9.5E versus 10D versus 10E. Then you will be able to search here on SF to figure out your size on other common lasts like Alden's. If you have an Alden's retailer nearby, I would also try Alden as their lasts have some idiosyncracies.

I have an Allen Edmonds near me so I will try to go there soon and try that out. Thanks!
