I'm trimming down my ties and squares. First time doing this, so about 1/3 of these are gifts. I have several questions here, for better future decisions.
I work in entertainment and do get on a stage weekly, so I do have some room to be fashion-forward. I can move between suits, sport coats, and other outerwear (shawl cardigan, M-43ish jacket, etc) and usually wear a tie with all.
Striped Ties:
- I know 2, 3, and 7 are all appropriate for both sport coat and suit (repp silk). How about the rest? 4 and 8, for instance, have a bit of satin to them.
- Aside from the texture difference, 3-4 and 7-8 are pretty similar in color. Would you hold onto both?
- 5 and 6 are both mall-brand ties. Are these just mistakes?
Solid Ties:
- 1, 2, and 7 are satins. I think I can justify 2 and 7 (it's a pretty dark red, and I like checked/striped shirts with a suit), but is 1 usable?
- 4 is a slender (2.75) white tie. I have quite the variety of shirts (stripes, checks, light OCBD, dark OCBD, tartan), but even so, is a white tie just not useful?
- Are 5 and 6 redundant?
Foulards/Patterns:
- 1 is a gag which I can use, but I feel it demands a full-on gag Christmas suit, which I've never made the plunge for. Is this usable by itself?
- 2 is a black dot tie, which is a bit of an odd animal, but I see some support for navy suit/white shirt/black tie around here for evening events (usually a grenadine though). Thoughts?
- Similar to the striped situation above, 3 is a repp while 6 is (I think) satin. Is 6 only for suits? Are these too redundant?
- I don't know what to do with 4. I usually see paisley in ancient madder here, which I think looks a lot better. This is another mall-brand tie - does it look like one?
While you're here, these are my pocket squares:
- I don't see too much patterned white (5) on the forum here, but this still has function, right?
- Any suggestions for future colors?
Thanks for your time.
