Applying for Canadian citizenship: how hard?

Has anyone tried? Currently a US citizen but I can't stand this country anymore.

No I'm not. However, I'm considering moving to Nova Scotia.

It's very different depending on how you want to apply...are you looking to emigrate to Canada? From what country? Are you already working in Canada or living here on a visa?

Applying for a Canadian citizenship is harder than most think. You have to take a written test to see if your ideals are compatible with the people living there.

Here i'll give you some answers to the test.

1. Are you gay?
a)yes
b)no

answer is a.

2. If someone invades the country what do you do?
a)defend the country
b) have gay sex.

answer is b.

3. Do you wish you were an American?
a) no Americans kick too much ass.
b) yes, because American men are so hot and i want to have gay sex with them.

answer is b.

Nope, fully staffed, please stay home. Or try Nunavut. I believe they have a chronic shortage of everything from drivers to doctors. Also, the weather is lovely. In seriousness: the easiest way, for an American, would probably still be to marry a Canadian. I have one friend who just received PR status by doing this. To meet Canadians, either come here on vacation, or qualify as a NAFTA professional, and get a job here.

its quite a bit harder than going from Canada to US. The gist of getting into canada is if you can do a job or possess a skill that a canadian doesnt, they will let you in. the idea is to make sure 'real' canadians have jobs and immigrents dont take them away. I am sure they have a quota of 'whatever' visas they will take, but its not quite as easy as the US!

I wouldn't recommend it as a doctor. It's grueling.

If you have money and a master's degree, it's easier.

Another way, is to marry a Somali warlord that is engaged in a war with the US. You will even get a nice town house in London, Ontario, and welfare. Even if you move back to Somalia, a nice Canadian attorney will file a suit to get your welfare continued and sent to you in Somolia.

I almost did this a few years ago - was considering a job offer in Toronto which required that I apply for Canadian PR status (I'm U.S. citizen) - trust me, it's not that easy. I had a CD$100,000 / yr. job offer and the amount of legal paperwork and legal review to demonstrate educational and skills qualification was still pretty significant.

Unless you just sneak in as an illegal (plenty of U.S. citizens do), to do it formally and legally as a skilled professional immigrant you will need an employer to sponsor you and meet specific educational and skill set qualifcations, and also demonstrate financial support (savings etc) so you won't be a burden on the Canadian state.

I am fairly certain it's a little easier under NAFTA. Still not a cinch.
