You could get a shirt with a longish floppy collar and just stick a big Kilt type safety pin through it. - Pins cost around $3

Or get a shirt and get an alterations person to put two small tie bar holes in collar.

The clip on tie bars I have don't hold well in most cases in my experience.

Or give up - its a look that doesn't always come off well - can look too stitched up and not quite right.

Or have you been watching too much Mad Men and drinking at the same time?

Is there some sort of anti-suit movement brewing up in VIC? Bet they probably couldn't differentiate as well if you're wearing a sportscoat/slacks combination....

Saw this at a cafe this morning. Thought it was rather stupid writing and a stupid way for these places to promote themselves.

Other than that I have tried getting into one of these places and was told to take the tie off or no entry. I said 'I'm comfortable in my suit thanks very much', 'take the tie off or no entry', 'um thanks, I'll go elsewhere'.

Having known a few bar owners in my time, the suits and boots crowd is what most bars try and attract because they spend money. Very little margin is made on beer, so thankfully I can't see many of Melbourne's better clubs changing to match this.

Those bars are so trendy that I have never heard of them. But then again I just visit Asian bars and clubs.

Anyway, it really bugs me that anything that has a little bit of class end up being labeled as "pretentious" or "yuppie" in Aussieland by the majority of people. And that it appears the only situations that are acceptable to wear a suit are: work, spring carnival, and mourning (funerals and weddings), and that's it. Just look at the comments left by the readers :S

Has anyone else in Melb noticed, on their way home from their yuppie work in their yuppie suits, last week (or was it 2 weeks ago) in the mX where they labeled a pocket square as being old fashioned and only suitable for people over 50?

I have never been to those bars, and don't live in Melbourne, but I sort of imagine them filled with hordes of young pasty types in skinny jeans, ironic T-shirts, bag beanies and what the Poms call "National Health" glasses - which may or may not actually have lenses (and they reckon wearing a suit is pretentious?).

I don't reckon they would get many of us yuppies in our yuppie suits there anyway...so, I can only think that banning us is some kind of lame publicity stunt.

As a matter of interest, when else do you wear a suit? I love wearing a suit but really only do so in those same scenarios. Fortunately, my present occupation mandates wearing a suit to work.

Re bars prohibiting patrons wearing a suit, to be honest, I can see where they are coming from and I don't have a major issue with it. What people are wearing does inevitably affect the atmosphere or vibe (to quote The Castle) of a bar or pub, to some extent.

Of course, loads of watering holes in the city cater to people who want to go for a drink after work. Doubtless most of these joints will continue to permit people to wear a suit.

Dont think you can get it in Australia. I just picked up some renovatuer at Leather Soul when in Waikiki last week, gonna give it a whirl tomorrow night
