I think its those guys. Don't know about the quality of their work unfortunately, but the guy that I spoke to (the non-tailor son of the tailor) said bespoke started at about $5,000 and was a bit of an arrogant dick.

$5k? What drugs are they on? That is Saville Row pricing (entry level).

John Cutler I would say is in another playing field compared to Carbone Master Tailors - his clientèle has the capacity to pay those prices.

Part of it is the fit, yes, but also its the experience of having something made just for you, in the exact fabric you want, with all the little details you require.

I agree. He's one of the best tailors in this country. I'm sure for those that can afford his prices, they receive some of the very best garments. No argument there.

Prices ok I guess, mine was about $650 and is an entry level. The fit is pretty good but all fused and the finishing is very poor really. They try and play on the stupid extras like working button holes on sleeve etc, but they looked pretty bad on mine and only 2 out of 4 work. The trousers do fit me pretty well.

Even thought the fit was good ( I say was because I haven't worn it for about 6 months after putting on some weight), it is oone of m most uncomfortable suits, though I can't but my foot on why.

The trousers are a highlight and fit very well, with nice side adjusters. Shirts are ok but at $100 each cottonwork blows them out of the park.

In conclusion, you get what you pay for, something better than the oxford/country road at the same price but it is 100% not bespoke and they are very pushy especially when you want alterations done on their next visit.

Visit any SF Hong Kong tailoring thread, and you'll get hounded out for promoting Raja fashions.

Henry Bucks uses their sales to sell all the crap in their stores at merely ridiculous prices. I've had a look at most of the sale categories and 98% of it I wouldn't bother with.

Interesting, I had one made in 1990 by Cutler and it cost $2500. Not that impressive actually (faux english fitted cut, flaring at the waist) and so I didn't go back. Zink seems as good for much better pricing.

Do you AusGents know if the higher prices for clothing & shoes in Australia are due to import duties?

I think that's part of it. What else impacts prices I would say is the small volumes, lack of competition and the general ignorance of most Australian men.

Also, shipping the raw materials or clothes themselves from half way around the world would add to the price significantly.

If the wool in your suit has to travel from Tasmania, to Milan and then back to Sydney, then those transport costs are going to be reflected in the price of the end garment I imagine.

Lack of competition due to a small market for fine clothes also has a lot to do with the high prices and lack of availability of certain items.
