You ever handled an $800 shoe from another maker? You clearly don't know enough to be making an informed comment. What does being locally sourced mean? Are you making excuses for the crap leather he uses?
Andrew McDonald's shoes look and feel second-rate. That's generous. They are horrendously over-priced. Just because you made it with your hands, doesn't mean it is any better than something made by machine.
Look, I'm Australian too. As much as I'd love to support a local operation, I'm going to call an orange an orange. His shoes are over-priced and poor quality relative to that price. You'd be extremely better off spending your money on mid-tier English shoes, such as Crockett & Jones.

Why don't you post pictures of your elite shoes detailing the differences? Better yet, seeing as you're such the big spender you imply cut them in half and provide a breakdown of both.

Although you can't structure a question, I'll answer what you implied - I do have 800+ shoes; A testoni black label and JL, but hey, these are probably poorly hand crafted shoes in Bologna and the UK.

Seeing as you know more about AM than I, please do tell when you visited the workshop, felt his shoes and watched them being crafted. I'm all ears and it will save me the trouble.

EDIT: if you were bright enough to read my post, you would have noticed I said I would go into the store and confirm. So, no, I'm not making excuses for the "crappy" leather as I have no idea what he uses, or who his suppliers are.

Heading into a (physical!) MJ Bale store to lift my suit game today - will probably opt for the 2 for 1000 deal depending on what's on offer. Definitely a charcoal/grey (thinking the Mudgee Grey Weave - looking at you, Jason/Charlie's Wardrobe!) and maybe a blue/navy.

Sydneysiders, is there much difference between the flagship Woollahra store and the others in terms of the range/stock they have on offer? Westfield Syd is more convenient but I don't want to be left hanging for choices.

Woolahra has a much greater range than WF. Plus, Flat White is a short walk from the store.

Sad to say its common in most large rural towns/cities now. When I lived in WW there was only one tailor who was reducded to alterations only. As for shoes well it was either RM or Rosi work boots.
I found that if I wanted to buy clothing I had to travel to Albury where they were a couple of good shops whose sales alone were worth the trip.

As a (sort of) Albury boy, it tickles me to see it regarded as the sophisticated alternative to the W :)

But, seriously, I do know what you mean. My Grandfather used to get the odd sports coat made up by a tailor in Albury. It was that kind of place. Good quality fabric (Zegna) but a bit flashy for my tastes (he liked to wear them to the races).

And there was a very traditional department store called Mates, that, as I remember it from my childhood, was the kind of place you could get anything. They had the old fashioned central cashier system - you would pay your money at the counter and the SA would place it in a little overhead zip-line thing with a docket and it would shoot up to a single cashier who sat on a mezzanine. Then your change and a receipt would zip back down.

Last time I was in Albury it was looking prosperous and there was a buzz. I think having more uni students in town has changed the place. But I wonder if you can still get bespoke menswear somewhere on Dean St - or if that side of the place has gone now.

LOL - isn't it 28 degrees on Saturday? Definite shorts weather.

Stubbies and boots is a Canberra look, its what they wear when not in trackies.

The Exquisite Trimmings one on P Johnson "pochettes" is pretty good too (20%, no VAT, free shipping), if you're into that kind of thing.

Finally caved and bought the light grey cashmere Drakes tie there with the "thanks" 20% off code, minus VAT and with free shipping came to about $120. Means I can choose something a little different when the HC cashmere ties arrive.

And I agree with wishiwasricher so here is a picture of some nice shoes (in my opinion, happy to hear polite disagreement).
