Yes, Carlson's is the way to go.. You want the Norwegian or Icelandic. This has been in their culture for a long, long time... Forget the capsules..the fresher the better. Take 2-3 Tbsp altnernate between that and Flax oil.... Raw Butter Oil is the best, but rare...

The capsules are Nitrogen filled to prevent oxidation. Even so, be sure to keep the fish oil in the fridge to keep it fresh longer. Having it heat up in your care will make it go rancid and it will do more harm than good.

If you want a less reactive oil that does the same thing, try Krill Oil, which I have not yet tried but many claim it is superior to fish oil with the same benefits.

Agreed, two tablespoons a day of Carlson's has made a big difference for my chronic tendonitis in both knees.

I throw mine in the fridge and I've never gotten any burps.

Read the labels on your supplements. I see several here mentioning using Kirkland/Costco brand. I'm normally very good about reading labels but for some reason I didn't that time. I was doing a 1 week stint during one of my rotations in a cardiologist's office (he's a big believer of fish oil) and he was talking to one of his patients about taking supplements and they mentioned that they were using the Costco stuff. He pointed out that the 1 gram of fish oil in there is actually 1/2 saturated fat. I was taking it at the time and I checked when I came home and saw that he was correct. He actually said that the same thing happened to him. I ended up doing some research and bought some online from some company in Norway. Too bad because the Costco stuff is obviously cheaper but when you compare the contents of how much DHA and EPA they contain, it isn't so bad. Most of us get enough saturated fat in our diets so adding to it, with something that's supposed to be beneficial on top of that, doesn't make much sense to me. As a side note, I've seen some docs offer to write prescriptions for [supposedly] higher quality fish oil for their patients but I admit to not knowing too much about it. I asked once and they basically just told me it's better. How much of that is just propoganda, I don't know, but I don't think they're getting any kickbacks or drug reps pushing it on them...

Hi Jumbie,

I take 2000-3000mg of Kirkland Signature (Costco) Omega-3 Fish Oil most days. I started about 5 weeks ago. Any saturated fat they contain, in my opinion, is insignificant. The DHA/EPA ratio is proper and they are USP verified. I don't know a better value.

Also, I find after a lot of walking or a 5k run, they seem to help with soreness and mobility, probably due to fish oil's anti-inflammatory properties.

What's the "RDA" (since there's no official one)?
Anything between 2 and 9 1000mg capsules per day seems to be the norm. I usually take 3 or 4 every morning. Some people prefer to take them with meals. How much you "need" really depends on how much unsaturated fat you get through your diet. If you eat fat fish regularly, you don't need to take as many capsules. Note: I don't take fish oil anymore, I take flax seed oil instead, which is also good for the people who don't like the taste of fish oil.

Nordicstyle,

I haven't had any ill effects or aftertaste from the fish oil, but have read that some do. I am curious how flaxseed oil compares in regards to EPA/DHA.

Flax has no EPA or DHA, it has ALA, which must be converted to DHA/EPA by the body. The conversion is not efficient though, I've read only 2 to 20 percent is converted, better to just take fish oil. Also, flax seed oil has been linked to prostate cancer.

Me neither. I used to take fish oil, but switched to flax seed because of the price (it's cheaper). Although fish oil (or krill oil) seems to be better, so maybe I should switch back again.

I like to throw a muskie in my blender and then shotgun it.

Is this bad?
