Altering a Jacket

The weather here is getting cooler, and I have a jacket that fits pretty well, except the sleeves are huge and I'd like to have them slimmed. I've never taken anything to a tailor before, so it would be great if I got advice from people here who have had something similar done before. Am I supposed to have an exact number of inches I'd like to take off, or will simply explaining to the tailor how I want it to look suffice? Also, is this a simple procedure and how much does this kind of thing run for?
