Does anyone have a good recommendation for a place in NYC to get good suiting fabric? I want to pick out some lining for a suit. I work on 44th and 6th so I am right in the area. Thanks in advance for your help.

Beckenstein's is reputed to be the gold standard in NYC. Also, Tip Top in Brooklyn, especially for bargain hunting. Google will yield addresses.

I like the people at Beckenstein's, but I have never found any suiting there that I actually wanted to buy. Tip Top is miles better.

Do they not have bread and butter stuff from the top mills? I haven't been since they moved uptown, but I thought they were pretty much the only place to get that stuff at the retail level.

To the OP, take manton's advice, not mine; he does this for a living.

They carry Scabal, but they won't sell it to the public. As for what they stock, I never see anything from the top mills.

Beckensteins +1. They have such a wide selection I find it hard to believe that you wouldn't find ANYTHING you'd like. They have great prices and the owner's a real nice guy as well.

There is also fabric place next door that sells suit fabric as well, I can't remember the name.

in thhe case of LS and NEd, the answer iss no.
Both buy their fabrics well. meaning they almost never pay full price from the distributers.
It make makes sense where the tailors order from swatch books.

It pretty funny that you cant find anything in Beckensteins since they have tons and tons of shirting and suiting fabric but it is possiable. Also they do sell scabal to the public you just have to ask. Overall Beckenstein is pretty easy to deal with. Lastly Mr. Ned uses some scabal goods you may not know it.

Thanks for the info. Is Scabal a good brand? Any other other brands I should look for. Obviously I am a novice.

Beckenstein's has a lot in stock at any given time but -- and I am sorry to have to say this -- very little, if any, of it is any good. Tip Top has much more in stock, and while maybe only 10-20% of it is any good, you can find top of the line pieces there at any given time.

Just my experience. If you see something you like at B's, don't let me stop you.

I think they're good. They have some books of traditional cloth that I've ordered from and like. They make a lot of super stuff as well.

They have been around a long time. A smaller version of Tip Top. Both places are hit or miss. You need to invest a lot of time looking to find what you want.
