I used to work with a guy who was on the DL. Or at least, he thought he was (until some open gays called him out!)

Had a fellow graduate student who went through the process. His three office mates in grad school (and good friends) were a chinese, a libyan and an iranian! He had been invited to many of the ethnic functions as a result. What this student told me was that an interview was a part of the scrutiny. He was asked questions about if he knew iranians (yes), libyans (yes), chinese (yes) etc..... He said that after being grilled for some time, he got tired and delivered a lecture about how so few americans were going to grad school in sciences. That it was impossible not to be in contact with foriegners in grad school in engineering.

He said that he then told the interviewers "This interview is over" and walked out. I do not know how embellished his version of this story was. He got the clearance! I think being part native american, part offspring of admiral buried at Arlington may have had something to do with that.

On the other hand, knew another undergrad student who was denied his clearance. His parents had come to the US in late 50's or early 60s. He was born here (in the mid sixties) but had one grandparent still living in Iran. This would not have been a problem during the days of the shah, but the shah was long gone.

He ended up leaving engineering to go into finance/IB.

in israel, about 20 years ago they decided that as long as you were totally and completly out, then you were ok if you were gay, in terms of security clearance.

How do a one-nutted kid, a homosexual cambodian love prince, and a guy who posts naked pics of guys on a styleforum add up to only be ordinary?

I have a current TS/SCI. Unless you are working for POTUS, the process is very long. Usually around 3 - 10 mos.

Have one. Definitely well worth the pain depending on your professional interest. If it's government or defense don't do without it!

Could you tell us, what were the books?

It is conceivable, however unlikely, that someone could get a hold of poor old granny and put pressure on the guy...

I had a temporary one. Kind of a pain compiling all the info, but not that big a deal.
Congrats on the new gig. Given the security clearance I assume it's not a different position at GM?
