Sartorial "rule" that you finally integrated into your style

There's always a tension between "the rules" and your personal "style".

If course there are those who believe that "there are no rules". This thread is clearly not for them.

What one rule did you resist and then finally give into, and are glad that you did so?

I finally started wearing pocket squares. Vive le difference!

That you can mix stripes, but keep their proportions/size different. I didn't think I could pull this off before but it works.

That the proportion/size of your tie, shirt collar and jacket lapel should be similar for balance. You don't want to mix those wide lapels with your EMO rocker skinny tie

That's not dramatic, is it?

Great thread. I'd have to say...

1. more chinos, less jeans
2. good fitting clothes via hemming and such
3. necessity of multiple good blazers in wardrobe
4. uniqueness of tying bowties

maybe these are just more things i've picked up over time. that's all i can think of for now..

-2 inch or greater cuffs with no break
-Pocket squares no matter what, and they can not match tie
-the real proper length of a shirt and coat sleeve, also showing cuff
-Always, with out fail have your shoes well shined
-heel taps should be on all shoes
-some ties should not have dimples
-texture in ties are of high value, not just colors or prints (grenadines and wools)
-Socks are an accessory-one that will garner the right kind of attention
-watches serve a purpose
-No tie space
-how to determine canvass vs. fusing. Also, how to determine machine padded vs. hand
-MOP buttons kick ass, and I notice them on others
-When and where to wear black shoes....when I want to look more sober and formal.
I think that is about it.

I suppose there are quite a few, but I think the biggest shifts for me have been to more structured clothes, and much more judicious purchasing, less wild spending...

Come on.

He is coming up with this style/rule-thing, again, implicating the tension (really???). Finally he is wearing a pocket square to be different????

But perhaps it is my fault. To get me clearly I should have written: Not giving a ****.

I can't claim that I've really embodied all that many rules (though I've certainly taken quite a few to heart), but anyone who remembers my posts when I first joined would probably see quite a difference in my current choice of dress:

1. I abandoned baggy raver-style jeans
2. I wear well-fitting, stylish dress shirts instead of baggy t-shirts
3. I try to rock the pocket square whenever possible
4. I avoid white socks with most outfits, and always wear socks that show no skin when my legs are crossed
5. I follow "the rules" in choosing color and pattern combinations
6. I wear my dress pants where they SHOULD be...at my waist
7. I don't wear or buy clunky, square-towed shoes and black suits anymore
8. My jewelry is still pretty heavy, but now it's much more tasteful, refined, and classic...except for maybe the lip and eyebrow piercings.
