can a 38r be made into a 38s?

ladies & germs, i recently purchased a super-nice isaia suit in 38r because it was a great deal.  however i'm about 5'8 and normally wear a short size.  can or should i get the jacket shortened by say an inch?  i'm conerned the proportions will be thrown off...particularly in relation to the pockets.  also the sleeves need to be done but then the buttons may to too close to the sleeve edge after. all views, opinions, advice, etc. will be tremendously appreciated.  thanks. ps the name of a good tailor in the los angeles area will be welcome as well.

I'm guessing that at 5'8" a good tailor might be able to pull this off for you. I'm a couple of inches shorter, and I KNOW it wouldn't work for me. But assuming you're correctly proportioned (and the pants don't have a long rise), it might be OK, especially if you're OK with a jacket that's just a hair on the longish side.
