White Dinner Jacket/Tuxedo Jacket for Houston wedding

I agree. But the only issue is that particular jacket has pocket flaps and double side vents in the back. And those were two things I have heard people say to avoid. Though I noticed brands like J Crew, Brooks Brothers, etc only carry jackets with vents. That surprised me since I thought a traditional jacket should be ventless.

Pocket flaps can be tucked in and then they are fine. And side vents are nothing to shy away from. I have both side vent and ventless tuxes. They're equally excellent.

A good place to start is proper terminology. There is no such thing as a " wing tiped shirt". Wing Tips are shoes,
otherwise known as "brogues". A Wing-collared shirt or a shirt with a "wing collar" is what you mean.

I think turn down collars look much nicer for black tie than wing collars do, but of course you should go with your preference.

Ok, So it looks like I know what I am going to do. Going to order the Ivory Shaw jacket and tuxedo pants. However I have a choice in pants. I can get the pants in either a "superfine durable" fabric (I assume a poly blend or something) for $50 or I can get 100% wool, half lined pants for $80. The Ivory DJ is a wool blend. Is wool the absolute best option to go with? The issue comes with when I want to buy the matching black DJ. I would most likely need to match fabric to fabric. The jacket I like that they sell is wool. Though keep in mind that I live in Houston where it gets pretty hot. But I figured I would mostly wear the black jacket in cooler months. Any guidance here would be appreciated.

Wool is always to be preferred over any sort of poly blend. A price differential of $30 for a pair of dress pants is really pretty insignificant. This is especially true if you can get a matching black dinner jacket later to mate with pants. Just be sure the pants and the black jacket are made from the same material.

Ok great. I know I am rapid fire with the question but I am almost there lol. My next question is as follows. I believe the lapels on the Ivory DJ that I am purchasing (you can see it previously in this thread), are not Satin. So with that being said is it still ok to purchase the black wool pants with the satin strip down the side? I have seen it stated that the seam on the pants should match the lapel which should match the bow tie which should match the cummerbund. So if I do go with the pants (with satin) then would I match the bow tie and CB material to the lapels or to the satin (which I would assume would be black silk)?

Yes. That "rule" about the stripe on the pants matching the facing on the jacket lapel only applies when the facing on the lapel is black, midnight blue, or some other almost black color. It doesn't apply when the facing on the lapel is white or nearly white.

The bow should be black, midnight blue, dead white, or (since this is an ivory jacket) maroon. Cummerbund should be black or midnight blue. Black wool pants with black satin stripe are fine with any of those (except midnight blue cummerbund, in which case pants should be midnight blue too).

Ok, so I have ordered my entire ensemble and I am excited that I know own my own tuxedo. I bought an Ivory DJ, and then I bought a 100% wool flat front black pants and 100% black shawl lapel black DJ. Pictures below.


I have already purchased my shirt, shoes, bow tie, and cummerbund. I went with the standard black silk BT and CB and the standard shoes. I also purchased a spread collar with pleated bib shirt. My question here is whether it is proper, or even worth it to purchase the Brooks Brother Golden Fleece tux shirt for $225. It is pure Egyptian cotton, has a detachable wing collar, and piqued bib. I would only wear this with the black ensemble above. I know that alot of purist claim that detachable wing collars should only be worn with White Tie. However I have seen alot of pictures from the 1920s and 1930s of people in black tie with wing collars. But then again maybe I watch too much Downton lol.
