Since the Mrs. and I switched sides on the bed, she now guards the bottom drawer of the nightstand where many of my scents reside. I've had to make do with the auxiliary stores in the closet and the chest of drawers, which isn't that much of an imposition, but still.

Today: Giorgio for Men. I've worn this for a while and still I feel like I nicked Fabio's bottle.

Today... YSL Homme. Nothing groundbreaking , but very pleasant. A good daily wearer I think... PS - the bottle of SMN Melograno arrived... everything seems kosher but I'll report more details after I try it...

Tom Ford Japon Noir.

I like it, but can't justify the price premium between this and John Varvatos which is awfully similar.

Varvatos Artisan... just cause they're handing out lots of samples so i snagged a few. Loads of citrus, but to me it's sort of that bitter rind smell like when you break open an orange. Plus some herbs and ginger.

Hey Thomas... so I mentioned that my bro really likes the Japon Noir (which I smelled and I think it's pretty nice but nothing crazy) and am also having trouble encouraging the purchase just becuase of the price for what it is... you think regular ol' Varvatos is a good comparable? Any others?

At the moment, regular JV is the closest thing that comes to mind. Both have this fruity-spicy thing going on at the beginning, and seem to close in on leather-patchouli towards drydown. Japan Noir is probably a tad heavier and more complex, but I doubt most people could tell the difference. This, btw, is one of the big frustrations of high-end scents - if they're accessible, then people think "oh, that's [department store scent]". If they're not accessible - i.e., weird - people wrinkle their nose and go...what's that?"

Yep. I agree. Tried this one the other day after going to the Ford boutique in the Hankyu Men`s Store in Osaka. They want about $260 for a 50ml bottle. Also tried Noir de Noir, which has an awful name, but is decent.

All in all, the Ford scents are very nice, but I just can`t seem to think that they are unique or wonderful enough to justify the price. This sort of was my opinion of the entire Ford store...

I thought Tuscan Leather was pretty good. Price does seem ridiculous on them, though.

OH, I think they`re all GOOD... I loved Amber Absolute, Oud Wood was nice, and so were the several others I tried... but $185 for a bottle puts you in league with (or more expensive than) the superlative, super-duper, have been around for centuries crowd and I just don`t know if Ford holds up that much. Is he better than Malle, for twice the price? Better than some of the limited Guerlains? L`artisan? Dunno...

Like I said on the manbag thread, I get the feeling that Tom Ford is simple for people who don`t care at all what the price is or if they can get better, cheaper, elsewhere.

I just hope there are enough Saudi princes and Russian oil tycoons to keep him afloat.

haha yeah that's how I feel about most Bonds and Creeds.... they're nice but I just don't think they're $150 nice.
