Parfumerie Generale Felanilla today, although topnote is a total haunting dental office, the drydown of vanilla is quite divine.

Richard James, the original 2003 release. Fruity, floral leather, I've always like this one despite a chaotic opening.

Divine L'Ame Soeur. This whole line is just extraordinary. L'Homme Sage is my fourth favorite Divine, and I love L'Homme Sage.

You think I would enjoy any of the other scents in the line? I  L'Homme Sage.

I think there's a good chance you'd really like Homme de Coeur. Like L'Homme Sage, it's discreet, refined, and gentlemanly. The most prominent notes are cypress and iris, with some juniper and a little bit of vanilla to round it out. The open smells a bit peppery to me, but nothing in the official notes suggests that I should be smelling that. Despite the iris, it's not the least bit feminine.

The ones I'm really nuts about--L'Inspiratrice, L'Ame Soeur, and Divine--I'm quite sure you'd hate, or maybe you'd appreciate their quality but find them unwearable. They're feminines in the classic French sense.

Today, Heritage. I know it's different, but it reminds me a lot of Bois du Portugal in feel. Heritage smells a bit more sophisticated to me though.

Thanks.

Today - I got an email about the new Sisley Eau d'somethingorother. Very green. Dries down to a sort of used ball bag scent.

I was describing L'Homme de Coeur from memory. I wore this as my morning pre-shower scent today, and I'd just add a few things. First, the peppery notes aren't just at the top; they persist, but don't dominate by any means. Second, it's woodier than I remembered. I'm amazed at how similar the vibe is between this and L'Homme Sage, even though they smell nothing alike. Their masculines all have a noticeable house style, as do their feminines. I'm even more confident than before that you'd really like L'Homme de Coeur.

It's Muscs Koublai Khan for me today. One of my exes assures me that the opening of this smells just like when you're smoking crack. (Yes, she knows whereof she speaks on this one. )

Heh, a bit of history from Luca Turin for those who don't mind reading a bit.

[COLOR=9900ff]It’s always heartening to see a small company break every rule and succeed. The perfect example in perfumery is a French outfit called Divine. If Divine had been a case study at business school the student would have failed. Location: Dinard, a sleepy little Breton seaside town across the water from beautiful Saint-Malo. You can almost hear the Paris MBAs chuckling: Dinard ? You must be mad ! Nothing cheec has come out of that part of the world since Anne de Bretagne left to marry our King in 1491. Products: Grande Parfumerie, taking the big guys head-on. What ? No “concept” ? No beach gravel in the bottles, no Celtic angle, no nautical gewgaws ? Product launch schedule: whenever the boss feels like it. What ? No “flankers” ? No line extensions ? Forget it.

Eppur si muove. The boss, by the way, is a guy called Yvon Mouchel who ran a perfume store until he decided to make his own. His first was the eponymous Divine, a lovely, powdery, buttery floral-animalic that smells lusciously expensive and isn’t. There are two other feminines, and more recently two fragrances for men, both composed by the young perfumer Yann Vasnier of Quest International.

It’s a great story: Vasnier used to go into the shop as a child, smelling everything. He struck up a friendship with Mouchel, went to perfume school at the ISIPCA in Versailles, came out tops, and is now composing fragrances for his old haunt. My
favorite is his Homme de Coeur, an unusual woody iris that strikes a perfect balance between dusty melancholy and optimistic freshness.

I'm cross posting this with the split discussion thread: Due to the complete lack of action here lately I'm planning on moving any future splits elsewhere. I will be closing down the Amouage splits in 1 week if they are not full by then. Please sign up now if you are interested.

Caron Pour Un Homme today. I haven't worn this in ages, but it's really a great scent. I forgot how well the lavender persists. I remembered that it went full on vanilla, but both elements are present throughout the day.
