The Perfumed Court or Surrender to Chance have sample sets of the "Perfumes: The Guide" top ten lists. These might be a good place to start.

SOTD: BOIS 1920 Oltremare. Amazing.

Santa Claus sent me a bunch of great samples via the US Postal Service!

I tried two of them today:

Love--by Kilian. This one gave me diabeetus! Super sweet, with boozy vanilla, orange blossom, and a marshmallowy base. Amazing longevity and projection.

Cartier Declaration d'un Soir. This is really remarkable. It's got some of the characteristics of regular Declaration, especially at the very top with the the cumin and other spices. But shortly after the initial spiciness, a big, vibrant rose emerges. I would never have thought that rose could work in that basic Declaration structure, but it really does. It's a spicy, woody, rosy scent that's very much a modern masculine. I can imagine some guys who are hesitant about rose might be willing to wear this.

That Santa. He's a fat ugly son of a bitch.

I never got ANY rose in d'un Soir. Weird.

I poked around the various fragrance sites to see what people were saying about it. A fairly large percentage of commenters said they didn't get much rose. Another fairly large percentage emphasized the very big rose note. That's really interesting. I'm one of those who get the big rose note.

Do you find it similar at all to regular Declaration? I've read commenters saying they didn't pick up the connection at all.

NOT EVEN A LITTLE. As I've expressed several times before, Declaration makes me think I smell like an unwashed crotch.

Seriously. Rambo usually channels Fang66 when discussing such things.

Last time I visited my family, my mother complimented me on M/Mink. I was surprised.
