Brogues with laces or without?

When it comes to Brogue boots, what are the pros and cons of laces versus no laces? Grenson makes a laceless Brogue Chelsea:

Most, like the Herring (and Allen Edmonds), have laces:

I like both the laced and the laceless versions, but I can’t decide if one would be more practical than the other. Is one considered more formal?

Either way, they’d be for a blazers-and-jeans/chinos wardrobe.

Personally, I far prefer the look of the laced version. I think chelseas naturally suit a cleaner look.

No one will lynch you either way though. Well, maybe a little. But this is SF; that comes with the territory.

The broguing and wingtip make that boot look like a mutant jodhpur, just doesn't look quite right. Go for the laces.

Only boots? I would think that laces help to hold your instep area better. Sort of alleviate any possible heel slip. I have no personal experience with boots without laces though, only non- boot versions.

Another vote for laces as I'm just not a fan of the laceless one.

Sounds like we've achieved the ever elusive consensus. I appreciate the feedback. Chelseas have been my go-to shoe for a long time, and I've been thinking it's time to spice things up with some brogue. Since I have Chelseas already, it makes sense to get something that's more of a departure. So, laces it is.

Now I just have to wait for one of them to go on sale. I was a day late for Allen Edmonds' anniversary sale.

I used to wear actual pull on riding jodhpurs when I was still riding (horses) back in my younger years. I recall them as being very uncomfortable to walk any distance in because they had little instep and arch structure and slipped badly on the heal. They were great for riding because they allowed for better foot articulation in the stirrup (versus full boots) though I only wore them in training (think SF CM has arcane rules, try equestrian events).

The laces look much more comfortable.

I, too, am a former rider, and my experience is opposite to yours: my pull-on Ariat Cobalt Pro paddock/Chelsea boots are the most comfortable footwear I've ever owned.

Cheers,

I will concede that my boots might have just been rubbish (that and I do have some seriously weird feet).
