This is my first nice watch. I agonized online with watches for probably 1.5+ years looking and reading and researching watches and was pretty certain I wanted the green Submariner 50th anniversary, which I later found out was no longer available.
Then one day my wife and I had a weekend to ourselves (with the kids at my parents) so I made of list of fun things to do, which included a trip to the AD with no intention of buying but just to see.
Sure enough, they had one SubC LV in stock and once I put it on it was definite love at first sight. I ended up buying it on a bit of an impulse then and there and now years later I still get the same feeling every time I put it on. It's definitely a special watch. I did do a brief flip and repurchase of another new SubC LV but long story there. So yeah, love the watch and I'm keeping it for life until I pass it down to my son.
My 39mm Explorer l that I bought a few months ago was a different story. I wanted to find an all around watch that would give the SubC a break and something more versatile as the green is a bit much for certain occasions.
I had gone in and out of my AD for the past year looking at the Explorer and it was always so flat and boring to me and I always left disappointed after reading about how much people enjoyed it.
But I decided to buy with my head and not my heart. I went to my AD earlier this year and put it on...it didn't sing to me but I knew it was practical and would serve its intended purpose.
The funny thing is that it now gets more wrist time than my SubC LV. I absolutely love its simplicity, its lines and the fact that it's got to be the most comfortable watch in the world. This one is a keeper for life too until I pass it down to my daughter.
I'm now on the hunt for the next piece (unlikely I'll be able to get it this year) and so far have my heart set on the Grand Reverso Ultra Thin, which I've tried on and really like and I need a proper dress watch. At the same time I often wear raw denim, Indy boots, leather belts etc. type of look and I think the SS Rolexes aren't the best for that, and I'm going to try and get in one of these days to try on a 42mm Panerai -- I have my eye on the 512. So we'll see...have the fun is the build up and planning for the next one.
