How Do You Smoke?

How do you hold your cigarette? From all appearances, there are two distinct ways: the forked method and the curved finger. These mannerisms can convey so much more than simple words; they are a sexual initiation of sorts, especially for those of the female persuasion. The forked is the more conventional way that you tend to see people smoke, rather American, which is not surprising considering it was popularized by American film-stars in the '20s.

The other style is more European; or continental if one wishes:

I typically use the first style. While I think most Americans use such a style, holding it up at chest level is seen as a bit effete; usually, the arm is completely dropped.

The European style should never be used with a hand-rolled cig when the police are around. I saw a kid get seriously hassled once because the cop thought it was a joint.

Why is it that people hold their cigarettes forked, but their marijuana sticks the Continental way?

Usually J's aren't as long or as thick as cigarettes, so it's more secure to pinch them between two fingers, and easier to pass, I'd assume.
