i have a problem with the last 337 fit for C&J, especially the width of the shoe feels tight when i try them on... does that mean the normal fitting (D or E??) for some other shoes - i'm lookin at sutor, Gravati, Vass, Santoni, Testoni, JM Weston - might be unsuitable for me? BTW, i ended up buying Connaught chestnut burnished calf (last 236), though i was determined to get handgrade IN THE BEGINNING.., many thanks.

I feel the same way about the Handgrades I have. Whilst there has been some rumor of C&J introducing wider fittings, at present the 337 only appears to be available in an English E width (I understand this is comparable to a US D).

How these compare width wise to other shoemakers I cannot say except in the case of Vass. Having discussed matters with others on the forum, I ordered a pair on the P2 last as I understood it to be more accommodating for a wider foot, at least compared to say the U last. No specific width option is available; you need to choose a last that will best suit the characteristics of your feet. For me, the P2 is very comfortable and I would equate it to an English F.

337 is a narrow last. In the toe, it probably corresponds to a C (US) in most other shoes.

I've had the opposite experience with my 2 pairs of 337-based shoes: the "standard E" fitting is pertty wide, somewhere between a D and an E in US terms. Though I agree they are narrow at the toe.

+1. An English "E" is a bit wider a US D. I don't feel it directly translates to a US D. 337 is a longer, more chiseled last. So the toe box is narrower, but you'd expect there to be a little "dead space" in there.

Yeah, I should have been more specific. I can fit a 9.5UK in 337 (where I usually take a 10UK in most UK shoes) because it is wider through the middle of the foot, but it does narrow down significantly in the toebox area.

While we're on this theme, what fitting issues are there with the 348 last? It seems much like the 337, although I haven't tried on a pair on the 348.

The 337 fits me about the same as most US D width shoes (11E UK vs. 12D US). The 348 and 350 fit me more snugly throught the ball of the foot and taper more quickly at the toes.

The 348 is definitely narrower than the 337 at the ball of the foot.

Appreciation to those who responded to this>>!
but my question is more about which particular lasts in other brands (especially EG, since that'll be my next purchase..) shold be avoided if you have a fitting issue with C&J 337??
i think this would be useful for those who intend to order online..
thanks lots.

Based on other threads, it sounds like the 337 last is similar to the John Lobb 7000 last, so you may want to avoid the 7000 if you've had problems with 337.

I'm actually interested in picking up some C&J handgrades online in the 337 last which I've never tried. If I wear a 9D in the Lobb 7000's, does anyone here know if I'd have a problem with 9E for a C&J 337 last (to the extent they don't make the shoe in a D width)? Thanks (and sorry for the threadjack)...

No way. the 7000 last is pretty wide and roomy, and my size in that is completely different from my 337 last size. I'm a US 9D in the 337 last, but a UK 7E in the 7000 last.
