Winter Boots ideas for Chicago --- office crossovers? change shoes at office?

I work in Chicago and need something that will be able to get through rain, sleet, snow, and slush. I'm not going to go marching through snowpiles or anything, but probably will be walking on sidewalks/ streets for at least 10-15 minutes each day.

I know some people just get an ugly rugged boot and change into nice dress shoes at the office, but I'm not 100% sold on that idea. For one, I think it would seem like I'm trying way too hard at my office, which is not that fashion forward to begin with. Also, I don't love the idea of leaving nice shoes at my office, or transporting them.


Anyway what do you think of these boots as potential business casual wear --- aka something I can wear with wool pants and a button down to the office, as well as step through some snow if necessary?

I also have a brownish jacket so am looking for that color, looking at a general price range of about $100 - $150 for the below.

IMO, all of those are "ugly, rugged boots." If you're against switching, you can also buy a cheap pair of dress shoes for the wet days.

It's Chicago in the Winter - look around on the El on a snowy/messy day and you'll see most everyone in functional boots to keep their feet warm and dry. Some will wear those all day, but most professionals are carrying dress shoes for the day.

i got my katahdins in (btw, 15% off at llbean now and $10 gift card for purchases over 50) for the winter and have some beater keens that I just Obenauf'd for the slippery days.

I put these over my shoes. I tuck the pants in if the snow is really nasty and slushy.

Eh, you're right. Overboots is probably the best idea.

I was actually considering that but couldn't find overshoes that went pretty high past the angle like a real boot. The ones posted look pretty good actually. I recently got a tan/ brown winter jacket (to stand out from the sea of black downtown) so would prefer brown colored shoes, even overshoes, but perhaps I'm being too anal/ OCD about things.


I probably should just get overshoes. I was eyeing getting a pair of brown dress shoes for the office anyway I can probably get for $200 at the AE factory seconds:

Obviously not to wear in the snow. Yeah I suppose there isn't a decent hybrid shoe that doesn't cost a fortune at least. I wonder how they wore shoes 100 years ago - didn't give a **** as much perhaps?

I'll still probably go for a pair of overboots, but I could use something to kick around in on the weekends. Are these just ugly old winter boots? I think they look pretty good, but I'm not certain. Definitely just for casual stuff.

for that style of boot, I was very pleased with the redwings i picked up on sale at brooks brothers.

Those are called "Safari Chukka" boots. With a name like that, I don't think Timberland was making them for Chicago winters?
