Laces to wear with black patent leather balmorals?

It's my understanding that generally people recommend flat black silk laces. I've looked around and can't find a pair less than ~$40 or so and just can't justify spending that much on laces unfortunately.

As I've probably made clear on several threads, I was in the market for shoes for my tuxedo, and ended up buying a very gently used pair of Brooks Brothers patent leather bals for $140:

The problem is, I'm not a huge fan of the round rope-like laces. I have to say I'm rather fond of these laces on the Suit Supply brand patent leather shoes:

I like the contrast between the jet black shoes and the slightly lighter (and flat) laces. What do you guys suggest/recommend?

You like X but is too cheap to pay for it.

Flat silk laces will be more expensive because silk is much more expensive then nylon and they are rare.

You can get flat black or grey waxed cotton laces here: https://www.hangerproject.com/closet/colored-dress-shoe-laces-1.html#.ULLbQYWbPJg

I have never used them but they look good in the pictures and I trust the vendor.

I bought some black silk ribbon on eBay for $3, snipped two pieces to the proper length, and presto, I've got silk laces for my dress shoes.

I'm planning on doing just this.

Trying to figure out what width ribbon would be best. I'd love my laces to look like this:

Maybe 1/4"? 3/8"?

Firstly, as a new new member who has taken to frequently consulting Styleforum recently, may I say how informative and helpful I have found many of the threads here. Thank you Gentlemen. Long may you continue.

I'm currently piecing together an evening tails ensemble (I have in the past hired). Your advice please on whether flat silk laces are the correct choice for this pair of C&J "Yare" (246 Last), worn as part of full evening dress. I cannot currently justify bespoke Opera Pumps).
