None had handguards that cut backwards. None had a core that was made of material that could easily be cut by an opponent's weapon.

You are right. It can't get away with dumb. Thing is nitpicking Kylo's light saber design seems far more dumb then any failings in the weapon you have pointed out so far. Like I said earlier, you don't even know how it's supposed to work in the film.

I was going to post the same thing as Ataturk. We've seen lightsaber's handles cut through before, and now we must suddenly assume that in this (crude) design that couldn't happen.

also only a marsupial would hit himself with handle of his own sword, so no it won't cut backwards

there is so much stupid **** in star wars and you nitpick at stuff that makes more sense than the original lightsaber SMH

no a marsupial would design Darth Mauls sword which makes no sense -still it's in movie about Force, Jedi and aliens so I don't even mind it
this sword has best practical design of star wars swords so far so idk why it's been object of such criticism, makes no sense
