Why did the Tie Fighter just sink in the middle of the desert? That's not how deserts work.

Rey previously had made a comment to BB8 when trying to send it on its way regarding such phenomena on Jakku

I liked it, but the Sarlaac had tentacles and teeth and stuff. I didn't see any tentacles when the TIE fighter went down.

Honestly, I do think Rey is a little bit of a Mary Sue. I don't think it is extreme ir that big of a deal, but I can't deny that they didn't do a very good job building up her fallibility.

In ANH, Luke is a whiney bitch. He's a good pilot, but his first lightsaber experience has him keep getting zapped by the training droid. On the death star, their rescue attempt is fraught with errors and they only get away because Vader wants them to (to lead them to the rebel base)

And even when he is flying the xwing, he isn't doing crazy high-g dogfighting maneuvers. He is gently maneuvering it down a trench and mostly relying on shields to protect his tail. He uses an inkling of the force to hit a target that is still more than 6ft wide... Womp rats are presumably much smaller than that.

I don't think Rey's feats are unreasonable... But I think in JJ's excitement of having a badass female lead, he forgot to throw in some moments to make her look fallible.

True but I did appreciate that they showed her fighting with a staff, so it wasn't totally unreasonable when she wielded the lightsaber. Finn's lightsaber skills were more WTF. I figure someone with no training would be as likely to cut their own leg off than hit their opponent.

They did make it obvious Rey grew up on the streets and had to learn how to fend for herself.

This.  And also, how he fought pretty well against Ren Kylo, but got his ass whupped by a random storm trooper.

I think that the Rey character was pretty well done.  Her great first time piloting of the Falcon, which was better than Han's in Empire Strikes back, was a bit of a wtf moment.

I think that it's much less Rey being a Mary Sue than it is Ren Kylo being so lame.  His retort to Rey saying that Han was like the father she never had. "You would have been disappointed."  Sigh.  Go tell your therapist, emo Vader.

Hey now...storm troopers are supposed to be elite soldiers who have been trained and brainwashed for that purpose from early childhood. Not unreasonable that they may have been trained in melee weapons.

Ren may be magical, but I doubt he had anywhere near the amount of combat training as Finn (and certainly has less physical strength). And antilightsaber storm trooper probably had extra training, so it is not that surprising he might beat Finn.

But Finn was a janitor

That probably explains why a storm trooper trained from birth didn't exactly look like he was in the best of shape.

Fok I'm surprised you have as much a problem with Fin briefly holding his own against Kylo as you do. The explanation is the exact same that you gave moments before for Rey. Kylo was badly wounded from a shot to the gut, bleeding out, not in the best emotional state at that moment and wasn't even fully trained in the dark Jedi arts in the first place. It's not like Finn kicked his ass or anything. He very briefly stood up to Kylo and ended up being put in a coma. He was lucky to be alive in the end.

Also keep in mind that Sanitation Department or not the First Order sent him into battle. It's not a stretch to assume he was given some combat training and that likely involved some with weapons similar to the one that Stormtropper he fought used.

I'll address Rey more later when I get a chance, but I do think this whole "Mary Sue" thing is a bit overblown when you take a step back and look at her character as a whole and don't just focus on her ability to use the Force at the end. [/quote]
