How useful is a solid brown flannel sport coat?

My main concern is that a solid brown flannel jacket with solid grey flannel trousers would look bland.

I think the key with a jacket like that is it has to very clearly be a sportcoat, if it looks like an orphaned suit jacket, it wont work. Malford's works because it has three patch pockets and likely some texturing. His jacket also looks to be a bit darker in color which also makes it feel more country and adds some contrast to whatever trousers he is wearing.
