Yeah, the new ones feel really strange and do feel slightly damp. It's really bizarre fabric, and, personally, I don't like it at all.

And, I suppose I could, but I don't really want to bother. It's holding up fine, and I'm honestly thinking of selling it anyway.

custom made neoprene laptop sleeves
I am going to buy one from here (hear good things) for my 10" laptop.
As far as bags go I really like my Icon Squad Backpack, it has lots of padding and provisions for a helmet and laptop. It zips together in the front and positions the weight in all the right spots to the point you almost forget you are carying a heavy pack. (also has 1-2in thick pads down the back)

My perfect backpack recipe Take one part German Bundeswehr surplus backpack.

(I bought mine at a local milsurp store for something like $17 or $20.) Add one part Tom Bihn Freudian Slip for organization

And one part Tom Bihn Brain Cell for your Mac (or other suitable sleeve)

That's not a bad idea. I don't care very much about paper organization, but I have been thinking about getting the Waterfield Sleeve and putting that in a non laptop bag of some kind. I wanted a messenger, but because of the weight, I'm not sure that's a good idea for my back (my back's fine and I don't walk a lot of places, but still). I'm not sure about slings, but some of them seem mildly cool, and I wonder if there are any that are reasonably well balanced. A backpack might be the best idea, but I have trouble finding anything honestly look good. The surplus route's not a bad idea, but I'm wondering if there's anything else.

For simple and understated bags, try Porter. Re: the suggestion for crumpler bags, I find them a little too colourful and a tad overpriced.

Porter has some decent designs, but I specified reasonably affordable for a reason. A $300 messenger bag is out of the question for me.

Nice tip; I usually just go with a cheap army surplus/canvas deal from the Bay, and then get another one when it gets ragged, but this is a prettly slick-looking outfit - I may spend a little more next and grab one of these. Custom options are always a major plus.

I got my J. Crew waxed canvas bag a couple months back, and I have had NO complaints, it's great.

Hey who's that really cool guy with that super leather backpack laptop case that looks so good and leather and nice? Oh yeah that guy is arethusa and he is real cool and knows what's with it as you can see by his neat leather laptop backpack that goes with everything and is so totally cool and street and hood and business like a mullet except also with a little fro on the side for the street part and also it is a bag not a hairstyle.

I totally see he is cool as he rides away now because I am so tired of those lamers with their canvas surplus thinking they're all mighty with their cheap product and thug tough look but really they are just farmers farmers farmers.

Bought the Crumpler king single about a year ago, I'm still happy with it (has a special pocket for a laptop)

If I didn't need to carry textbooks around, this would be my next choice:

Turntablelab has some good choices, some reasonably priced.

A messenger bag, but you wouldn't want to see all the stuff I carry in a medium Timbuk2...its insane. I haven't really tried carrying a laptop in it though. I'd personally stay away from Maxpedition...not a big fan of their stuff.
