Probably.

Currently going through comp. negotiations right now and they're firm on base salary, which, to be fair, is quite a bit higher than national average for this position to begin with. They're willing to give me a signing bonus to meet me in the middle of what I originally asked for, however.

But beyond the whole compensation part, I'm just not super giddy. The position itself is what I want, career-wise, but it's for a very large corporation. So I know for a fact that things will take so much longer at this company, which is a death knell for the type of work I'd be managing. There's a reason why every company ever is now jerking off to the Agile method. This company I got an offer from works under the Waterfall model.

Also, the location: RI. I'm scared to leave a major city like Boston. I don't know what my social life in Providence would look like.

My gut has me torn 50/50 on this. What are some of the things I should be thinking about?

Boston is a major city? Anyway, Providence will be full of the same Red Socks/Patriots loving assholes, so you'll feel right at home.

Surprised at your disdain for large corporate. Sounds like this is a stepping stone for you. Large companies make for credible resumes.

Seconding the question about what don't you like about a big corporation?

They tend not to have bean bag chairs.

He's not sure how the "waterfall" method compares with the "golden shower" method he was used to getting from his old bosses.

Compared to Providence, it sure is a major city. Couldn't give two less shits about baseball / football (sports in general), so that part is irrelevant for me.

I'm not against large corporate as a general philosophy. I'm only against them for the specific field of work I want to be in. As a rule of thumb, software development will take about 1.5 - 2x longer at a large corporation compared to a startup or medium-sized company that practices agile.

Besides, I spent three years at a large, corporate company for my first job out of college. Now having worked at the complete opposite type of company, I feel more confident that I'd enjoy a medium-sized company the most for the type of work I want to do.

Doesn't sound like you'll be happy with this.

It is good to see JayJay again, and I have to say I'm inclined to agree with him.

GF, take this with however many grains of salt you wish, as I'm not in the corporate world, and thus there may be things I'm missing. However, it's hard for me to see why a single, not-that-long unemployed, young guy, who has enough liquidity to live comfortably without a job for a good stretch of time, would take a job on which he's lukewarm in a city that doesn't really appeal to him. You've been prudent and put yourself in an excellent position to wait out a situation like this, and it seems a shame to waste that preparation by making a move you don't love just so that you can be employed again.

Of course, turning it down carries risk, but it seems to me that you're in the best possible situation to take a risk.
