Probably, I don't know the details of your situation.

I see most internships as a previous generations ever increasing way to screw the younger one for their gain. Now it's been made socially acceptable. All the while, most internships these day are related jobs that used to be paid of yesteryear.

Oh, and the same older generation will charge you our the ass for and educational experience that in present day is dubiously beneficial. Compare that to the relative ease of education that generation used to enjoy. Then the same ones who were stoned on pot of yesteryear, are bitchin falsely about spoiled youth of today.

Lastly, don't question the status quo... Society is always looking for the next person to throw under the bus.

Wish you the best in getting ahead.

uh mind giving some deets about your situation? I didn't read the link but if it's over amount of work/time spent on an unpaid internship I'd say suck it up and get the experience/contacts. IT's crazy competitive out there for new grads and companies can do nearly whatever the like given the oversupply of desperate people.

Was e-sarcasm about unidirectional path taken to reach "success" that has added more sandtraps for young people to fall on their way trying to seek a better life. Following the traditional path works for some better than others and is far less certain.

Also, re-reading the post it's worded a little more reactionary/ harsh, as it generalizes outliers previous generations who don't fit that mold. Didn't mean for it to read chip on my shoulder. Still plenty good things in life. :)

The following six criteria must be applied when making this determination:
1. The internship, even though it includes actual operation of the facilities of the employer, is similar to
training which would be given in an educational environment;
2. The internship experience is for the benefit of the intern;
3. The intern does not displace regular employees, but works under close supervision of existing staff;
4. The employer that provides the training derives no immediate advantage from the activities of the intern;
and on occasion its operations may actually be impeded;
5. The intern is not necessarily entitled to a job at the conclusion of the internship; and
6. The employer and the intern understand that the intern is not entitled to wages for the time spent in the
internship

Do these not apply to you?

You can probably sue, and lose and get blacklisted by whatever industry you are trying to get into....

I see two options:
A.) Suck it up and do the work
B.) Go out and get job that has an advertised pay scale.

I can make good arguments for at least 2 that do not apply to me.

This is actually sort of an emerging area in the law (I do some employment law and keep up with this). Not sure how many trials there have been but the law is pretty clear on it.

If you have the facts, you may well win. You will get minimum wage for the hours you worked, and in exchange you will ensure that this is your last internship ever and most likely the last job you will have in your industry. Unless, of course, your law suit garners enough attention to show up in a google search, in which case this may be your last job in any industry.

ha!

what a dick.

would love to dish out more dirt to then have you throw back at me, but we'll just be running in circles.

FWIW, I could careless what is asked of me. But recognize the principle of it all--I am not interning if I am filling a hole in your operations. The work I am doing is FBO of you. Is it odd saying that people get hired everyday to work and learn on site concurrently? In other words, you work and learn something new everyday.

this is what's wrong with today generation. suck it up, and shut the **** up. if your boss isn't asking you for sexual favors, do it and be glad for the opportunity.

edit:
and please, i am far from the entitlement type of kiddies who i shared my uni experiences with. far from it

Those internships are illegal. And I see your point, to an extent. Maybe one day the DOJ will start cracking down. But as has been pointed out, there is no winning here. Unless this principle is worth ruining your career over, that is.

Most internships over here are paid, obviously at a lower rate, but paid nonetheless. At a decent place, pay is at least $20/hr.

Blah, blah, blah by Gen Y thinking they have it so tough. Gen X is the generation that is/was truly screwed over.

Gen Y in IT bizzo checking in. :foo:

Unfortunately you've deleted your original post, but the time spent writing it was most likely wasted compared to improving your skills so that you can be more employable. From your follow-up posts, it appears you're currently in an internship and feel you're not properly compensated for your efforts.

Nobody wants to hire a sadsack who thinks life should be handed to them on a silver platter.

You're in one of the most buoyant industries in the world, get to work and move up the food chain. And before you start complaining that 50k desktop support jobs are hard to come by, realise that repair and provisioning jobs are rapidly moving down the value curve to where low-skilled people compete for less jobs, while architect-type jobs (this is a loose catch-all term, but involves people who use technology to solve business problems) become more complex, more in demand, and pay more money.

I started out as a "technician", and if I hadn't done more than I was paid to do, I'd still be there (and probably complaining about it, letting my terrible attitude poison my life, like you are doing now)
