I got my second attempt of Marlow Wingtips today. Unfortunately these make very unattractive fine creases in the vamp that I've never before seen in shell which makes me wonder if something is wrong.

I don't want to presume to ask an inappropriate question, but are you positive that you got the right size? How do they feel?

Spiff, I'm never sure of that. I'm between an 11.5D and a 12D on a brannock. These seem to fit well.

Why do you ask? What do you see that makes you suspect a sizing issue?

When I get a brand new pair of shells, and they look so beautiful when they come fresh out of the box, I get anxious about the size of the shoes while I'm looking at the brand new creases form. I use the Mac Method to break in my new shoes. That's just me though. I guess this is a long way of saying if they feel good wear the crap out of them. And, don't worry about the creases. Congratulations.

Ugh some of you were right! The damn shell on my Marlows are dry... anyone successfully bring them back to life? Not sure what I should do, already did 3 coats of Venetian...

I'm really not sure if it's actual dryness. Could it be more a build up of wax that just needs to be buffed?

Tristan - that's a good point. I've spent a ton of time buffing it which is weird. On a side note, I used a coffee filter (lol) to buff my shell Aldens and brought them to an insanely good shine.

Yeah, when shell is new, it takes a while for the waxes applied at the factory to come out. Wiping with a damp cloth, then brushing and wiping with a dry cloth (this is the 'Mac Method') should be all that you do for a while.

That's what I did and they began to look newer, over time.

It looks like a counterfeit pair. Did you buy these BNIB from china and jones?

I ordered from RL website using the recent 25% promotional sale.

I have decided that those fine wrinkles in the vamp are heinous and I am sending them for another pair. For that much for shoes, I expect perfection.

I have 3 pair of shells (AE stand, Alden LWB, Alden Indy) and none of them have ever made such a hideous fine crease such as these.

Typically, unusual creasing like this indicates improper sizing (i.e. they may be too big). If there is too much room/space inside, it may create unsightly or atypical creases. However, it may also be that you have a defective shoe. What size did you go with? Best of luck to you...

I went with 11.5D, same that I wear in AE last 5 shoes. They certainly weren't too big. I had a small amount of room in the toe box, but not much. It was a snug fit. Unfortunately the RL store near me doesn't stock these shoes to go try out.

Are your 5 last shoes TTS or did you size down from TTS? I took my Marlow Wingtips half size down from TTS, but wear my 5 last AEs TTS.

I've seen other (rare) cases of similar weird creasing in shell, I don't think they depends from fit but from the leather itself.
Ask for an exchange if possible.

Wise decision on the exchange ... let us know how the next pair works out.
