I've had a Royal Oak Offshore(Volcano) before... kinda bulky but great for casual. Is he looking for something more dress appropriate? Something with sharp lines or smooth? Simplistic in design or busy?

Patek Nautilus is a great starter PP starting at around 20k...
There are some great Panerai's to be had for half that price like the PAM329.

If he was looking for something with sharper lines, definitely the Royal Oaks, RO Chrono, or Hublot Big Bang's Ice Bang, All Black, or Aero.

None of those will hit $40k.... but there are some special edition ones that will come close....

I don't have experience with $40k+ watches but I imagine they're still among this triumvirate:
Patek Philippe
Vacheron Constantine
Audemars Piguet

In all honesty, closing in on $40k are just over-glorified, extra bedazzled, super fine gold and diamonds. Reaching 100k is different.... enter tourbillons :D

I suggest spending 5k on a few replica watches. If he drives a lambo no one is going to say that his watch is fake lol.

I would say a Rolex Daytona for example. That's a big watch, which PATEK mostly doesn't have.

A person who has 40K to spend on a watch should have enough sense and style to pick one himself without asking anyone's opinion.

Maybe my view of the world is too idealistic

I would do $10 - $15K on an IWC and the rest on Booze, Coke and Hooker's...
No seriously - IWC 3714, IWC Big Pilot , VC Overseas, (so many options under the $40K range).

Not necessarily... The man is either nouveau riche or just has a lack of awareness of finer things and wants to aquire a status symbol.

That is a lot of ******* money to spend on watches. I'd buy a 5k Rollex and invest the rest of the money in something else to make more money.
