Thanks for the comparison, I looked around reddit over in the Goodyearwelt subreddit and found a picture I liked with a lined boot as well as without the celastic toe. I say it resembles something closer to the Alden lift. Without the celastic toe I feel like the boot would bend too easily.

Seems like this thread has been slow lately. No new boots to show off? How about some broken in boots to show off?

I have some shipping in about a week. I can't wait to show them off!

I'll be happy to [post some pics but I'm waiting until they are fully broken in. It'll be a while longer.

Alrighty then, got my SDs today.
The fit is good, though I think that I would have been ok without the custom option (right foot EE, left foot E)
People have talked about the Dress leather being a little plasticky, but I like it, looks tough with much potential for waby saby!
Heads up, and I didn't know this before, but the Swing last has a little less of the arch ease action going on, which is a little disappointing to me.
That being said, they are very comfortable.

Can't believe that both these and my new Vibergs work for my paddles!

Here's the make up:

White's Semi Dress $389.95

Single Celastic Toe Box $0.00

#38 Swing Last $0.00
Brown Edge $0.00
Mismated Sizes: Left-10.5E, Right-10.5EE $0.00

Quote: From what I've heard the brown dress is rather easy to break in. Yours are taking a while too? I have brown smooth on my Classic Work Boots and I had them leather lined. They have been VERY stiff but it's going away gradually. It's the very top part that fits around the ankle that still causes the discomfort. I would have gotten the rolled top if I knew they would be this stiff.

They are getting there though.

What is this soft brown dress you speak of?
These are like steel moulds for a pair of boots.

I haven't heard of any "soft" dress brown just that it is much easier to break in than the standard brown and black oil finish leathers. At least that is what I've gathered from reading every post on this thread over the past 3 months. Some have even said they didn't require any break in at all. I guess everyone has different experiences.

Your description of "steel molds" describe my exact thoughts on the brown smooth Classic work boots I bought. I figured that they were so stiff because of the leather I chose. If you've been going through the same thing I've been going through with your break in I can feel your pain. Mine are just about there though. Probably another month or two. I decided to just wear them as much as I could and get it over with. I'm in 'em about 16 hours a day and don't even take them off when I'm home.

I would think that the oil finish leathers would break in sooner than the others by virtue of their being saturated through with preserving oils, though I have no direct experience of this.
16 hours a day! You are a hard man, I just wear my White's at work every second day or so, with this just being my second week of doing so.
They get more comfortable walking in after about 15 minutes, unfortunately I drive for a living and am in and out of a van all day, so opportunities for stretching them (and my feet) out are few.

I drive for a living as well.so what I have done is go out of my way to flex them as much as possible. Stairs are a favorite and I try to walk on uneven land/pavement etc. as much as possible. Then I crouch down and bend them that way a few times a day. It does seem to be hastening the break in. If I put them away and don't wear them for a few days while I continue to break in my Smokejumpers they stiffen up again so I'm going to wear them every day until the are broken in. The Smokejumpers still need some breaking in but they are pretty comfortable already..

Maybe it has to do with what "lot" of leather they used when making various boots. Some may just break in faster or be more pliable from the get-go.
