ED: Now what really works for finding movies to watch is allmovieguide
. It used to be a bit better, before they slickened up the interface, but it's still very good. They categorize based on genre, tone, and theme, with lists of major/representative movies in each subcategory of those three areas.
For instance, The Usual Suspects is in Crime, Thriller, Crime Thriller, Ensemble Film, and Post-Noir for genre, Cons and Scams, Mind Games, Crime Gone Awry, and Assumed Identities for theme, and Talky, Tense, Enigmatic, Menacing, Cerebral, Cynical, and Wry for tones. I find this immensely useful because I'm often more interested in a particular tone or aesthetic than a given genre.
