Emailed from a friend: If I wore that, I would look like a douche. Is it because: 1) I don't have the physique for it 2) I'm not famous 3) both

My reply: It's not THAT "crazy" You just need to be in the right setting. Wearing that to WalMart vs. Wearing that to garden cocktail party The sneakers and sunglasses are ugly. What say you?

I would say the only thing that I think makes it look really bad is the sneakers and the mandarin collar. A button-down collar and a real pair of shoes would make it look very nice.

If by douche you mean some random guy that you can only WISH you were, then yes.

Actually, doesn't Flusser say to match your complexion? (p.21)
Then, he says that pale complexion / low contrast ....needs brighter/warmer shadings (p.28)
Also, to bracket the face, you want to match your hair (p.30)
Conflicting advice here.

Who is the guy in the pic anyway?

+1

I would add a navy blue tie and a pair of brown/tan/chesnut colored oxford.

Two weekends ago I wore something similiar to a nice resteraunt in Old Town, Alexandria, to celebrate my 47th birthday with my wife: Khaki 1818 Madison suit from Brooks Brothers, white linen button-down shirt worn without a tie, a pink gingham linen pocket square, and white bucks sans socks. A 30 year-old African-American guy crossed the street as we were approaching the resteraunt and said, "pardon me, but I had to cross the street to tell you that your look simply ROCKS!" My wife said, "Hey, what about me?" and he said, "Excuse me, you look fine - don't get me wrong - but GOOD GOD, you don't see that look on your man every day; he's stylin'!"

The only reason I put in the African-American bit is because me and a colleague here at the office ocaissionally get these kind of street props and it's almost always from African-American men.

Lesson learned - you gotta have guts to dress like that, but if you do so with confidence, it's worth it. My wife - who usually rolls her eyes at my recently embraced dandyism - was finally converted to my new style sense that night.

The suit is the only thing right in this picture.

Of course not. They are 'Afro-Caribbean'

I wore a similar coloured suit to an outdoor wedding in Oxnard a few years ago. Cream silk and wool sharkskin suit, French blue shirt, gold tie with French blue repeating pattern. Panama hat as it was a Jewish wedding and I thought it polite to have my head covered.

Got a few digs about failing the audition for Duran Duran's 'Rio' video but they were well meaning, got lots of admiring glances and hooked up with a very nice lady too. Result!
