I was hoping to get some input on what would be a great first overcoat (or really to confirm my decision). The primary purpose will be winter coat for NYC and I will be a mid 20's associate at a law firm. The coat is going to be in navy (not too dark though a really nice color of blue, JJ Minnis Melton 100% Wool). And I most likely will only be able to get one overcoat this winter but plan to supplement it next year with a bespoke camel hair polo coat. Hopefully, these will be the only two overcoats I need.

So onto my question.

I initially was thinking about a navy chesterfield with a velvet collar but came to the realization that might be too formal of an overcoat for everyday wear. I then found a photo of an overcoat that I loved. I have attached the photo and am thinking about getting one made exactly like it.

I would go SB for a junior associate in NYC law, but go with what makes you tick.

I really like the db coat in the photo you posted. Do you have any idea as to who the original maker is?

A Chesterfiled with a velvet collar is great But personally, I would choose a heavy Navy herringbone cloth....preferably 26-35oz coupled with an Ashtrakan collar and matching leeve cuffs The London Lounge has had great articles & pictures on this topic http://www.thelondonlounge.net/forum...hp?f=39&t=8853 Velvet collars on an overcoat: http://www.thelondonlounge.net/forum...vercoat#p46057 DB overcoat: http://www.thelondonlounge.net/forum...spoke+overcoat First time bespoke overcoat: http://www.thelondonlounge.net/forum...vercoat#p44704

Thanks for the input so far. And I want to say the coat might be a RLPL but am not entirely sure. I just saved it to my desktop recently when searching for information about overcoats and didn't pay much attention to who actually made it.

I would go for the DB if that is your preference. I do not consider it less formal than an sb, however. On the other hand, I would not worry about being too formal with the overcoat. A dark blue chesterfield is on the formal side, but you can wear it night and day with anything from a suit to full dress. Once you get the polo coat you will have two coats that cover everything.

I have a dark blue db just like the one pictured but without the ticket pocket, a tweed sb with ticket pocket, and a tannish sb chesterfield with a brown/green velvet collar, and feel like I have all the bases covered - especially as, where I live, I can go all winter without wearing any of them. I'd like a polo coat but unless I can find a good one RTW, I cant justify bespoke.

If you opt for a velvet collar, be sure you keep a piece of cloth sufficient to replace the collar in case you change your mind at some point.

I much prefer DB to SB for overcoats. I think a SB Chesterfield would look far more conspicuous on a young man than a plain blue DB.

I happen to be getting a plain blue DB myself so my biases are obvious.

I think i might agree with you on DB vs. SB for overcoats. I was trying to look for some SB that I like as much as the DB i posted and just couldn't find any. Found some other great looking DB though. Attached is another that I really like. Still think the one I posted above is better for my needs though.

Yes, a legal associate in his mid-20s should definitely get an overcoat with an Ashtrakan collar

If Astrakhan collar, then beaver top hat.

If top hat, then cane.

If cane, then monocle.

If monocle, then cigarette holder.

If cigarette holder, then you are unlawful in San Francisco.
