No, BBC English is not RP. They're derived from different accents. RP is is more Kentish, while BBC English -- the more modern of the two -- is derived from the "University English" of the area surrounding London (Oxford, Cambridge, etc.) As for diction, spelling and grammar, I'll repeat: you equated Commonwealth English -- which IS mostly about diction and spelling -- and RP, and they are not the same thing.

They're digraphs now (generally, at least in RP and GA especially when followed by rhotics). Some words in some dialects have smoothed out the dipthongs to single vowel sounds without changing the spelling (e.g. 'about' in parts of Canada). Most English speakers, oddly enough, preserve some falling dipthongs while most others were smoothed to a single vowel.

The Canadian example you quote is still a dipthong; it is pronounced by most Anglo Canadians as /Λu/, roughly. But the previous words you were talking about were never dipthongs in English, only French. The diagraphs were used simply to show French origin (as opposed to words from Latin, like governor, which have rarely been spelled '-our'), not English pronunciation.

It was a nasty thing to say, and I'm disappointed AF felt the need to say it, rather than remain silent. I think AF is a nice guy (and I've met him IRL), but it's unfortunate to me that he made that statement. 'Commonwealth English' isn't even a real term outside of this forum. I used it to refer to what JustinW mentioned.

As for BBC English/RP: what? Firstly, the OED uses RP for its pronunciation model. Secondly, 'BBC English' used RP as a model since its inception.

This doesn't make sense, since words from Normal French or Latin which lacked a dipthong are spelled by Chaucher and others as if they had one (governour, reportour) and the phonetic spelling of French loanwords include the dipthongs from people like the Sir Gawain and the Green Knight poet (odour) and William Langland (doctour).

I am not in favor of banning the fran, but this is hardly some isolate slip. He has a long history of saying really gross inappropriate things about corpses that are still warm.

I don't think it was "bad," but it was nasty. I just find it better to avoid negative comments about people who have recently died, especially when it's easier to simply not make a statement at all. If someone had asked AF what he thought I would say he's at no fault for expressing his opinion. However, the nice thing about an internet forum is that we can simply move on to the next thread. There was no reason AF had to come into that thread and say something nasty; he could have let the Dems have their circle jerk. The fact that he made a point of posting is what is bothersome to me, as he was essentially going out of his way to piss on Murtha's grave.

I really wish people would just pass on making negative comments in obit threads and I've said this many times previously. It seems to me that AF is far from the only person to take swipes at the recently dead in these threads. I wish everyone would just STFU in the obit thread. Anywhere else is fair game but show a little restraint in the obits. It would be unfair to single AF out for doing this however.
