I know this has been long-debated here and often the only pics that are cited showing that one may wear a BD collar with DB suits have been a couple of Grant and Astaire but that many argued that they were an aberration.

I was watching Comrade X last night with Clark Gable and Hedy Lamarr and, for your edification:

In another scene later with the collar undone (and a somewhat undone, Hedy):

What's more interesting is some of the people that maintain this is taboo will get DB windowpane suits made up and wear them with balmoral boots.

If you're willing to wear a tie with a button down what's the point about complaining about the suit?

Couldn't agree more, in fact I wear fc bd shirts with db suits often.

If Clark Gable jumped off a cliff, would you do likewise?

A button-down is the most casual business shirt one might wear. A DB is the dressiest coat that one might wear. Combine them if you like but be careful. While combos like that can succeed wonderfully, they are very easy to screw up ... you don't want to look like some clueless farmer from Wichita.

In this particular case, I don't think a BD adds anything to a DB or enhances it in any way. It just makes you look like you don't know what you're doing. Yeah, Gable did it. But maybe some idiot director made him.

I think the second statement is suspect. I forget the historical reasons for why, but apparently double-breasted is actually less formal than single-breasted. At any rate, I wear button-down collars with my flannel double-breasted and don't have a problem with it. The combination is more casual, but sometimes that's the point.
