Damn good choice.

I actually drink champagne with dinner, like most people drink wine. It's not just a special occassion drink for me. Feuillate, Bollinger and deVenoge are my daily drinkers.

There's nothing wrong with that. I think the acidity of Champagne makes it a great wine to drink with food.

We are members of the Schramsberg cellars club and enjoy theirs as much as any. Like edmorel, we drink Champagne and sparkling wines with dinner. We also drink it instead of a cocktail. Our feeling is that champagne makes any event a little more special and we love the taste. Why wait for a special occasion?

Champagne absolutely does not sit well with my stomach. Nights involving champagne almost consistently result in disaster.

I was talking to a Champagne maker in Ay, who said something to the effect that the majority of wines produced in Burgundy and Bordeaux are exported, whereas the majority of Champagne produced actually stays local. I found the part about Champagne surprising because of my perception of what context it is drunk, but was then told that people in Champagne drink the bubbly all the time.

There's a LOT of people who, when overindulging on bubbly wines, get punished the next day with a wicked hangover.

Anyone drinking Prosecco? I've been going that route more and more.

We have found some delicious and cheap Prosecco a Trader Joe's that is ideal for on a warm afternoon and at lunch. It's lower alcohol content is more forgiving mid-day.

+1. well at least I like to, but I don't often drop $60 for wine anyways. But I absolutely agree it can (and should) be drunk at any time.

Aside from my obvious Italian bias in the sub-$150 category, I think Champagne is one of the most under the radar wines out there. There are dozens and dozens of 'grower' Champagnes in the $40-55 range that are just phenomenal, and nobody ever looks in this category. Sure Dom P. is excellent, but the name surely inflates the price and people only buy it for what they deem to be special occasions. Look beyond this and there are some stunning wines to be had.

Also, Cava is high on my likes list. Great values can be had, but I see the region really picking up momentum and I expect prices to creep up for the more acclaimed producers.


I still drool recalling 3 weeks ago, Grand Cru burgundy from 1996 for dinner, and a Blanc de Blanc Champagne with dessert (this was at Daniel)

at the place I frequent for brunch on most Sundays, I get 2 glasses of Prosecco
