Essential Outerwear Pieces Every Man Should Own in the Northeast?

I'm looking to build a staple collection of outerwear suitable for the northeast (currently live in Texas so I haven't had to deal with this issue).

So what are the essential coats/jackets every man should own?

Looking for details on: type, length, color, pattern, fabric

And trying to narrow this down to JUST the Essentials since I'm pretty much starting from scratch...

What I have so far is:

  • A Shearling RLPL Bomber Jacket (waist length, cashmere exterior, shearling lining)

  • Leather RLPL lambskin jacket (waist length, no substantial lining, just a poly-fill)

I think that essential is a pretty subjective term, but I would venture to say that a navy peacoat is a pretty classic piece.

without knowing anymore information (i.e. for casual wear, business wear, etc.)

a raincoat
a winter coat
a 3/4 or other 'spring/fall' coat

i wouldnt necessarily consider either of the two coats you listed as being 'essential', though either could probably serve as the 'spring/fall' coat

Essential for business and casual - the whole span

I realize the two I listed may not be essential, just stating what I'm starting with..

That's good to know

So you don't consider the trench and overcoat as "essentials?"

Because I'm trying to minimize here yet cover all the bases

It depends on where you live, really. You don't need an overcoat in CA.

It is ok to just read the forum sometimes, instead of responding when you have no ******* idea what you are talking about.

There is no mac, trench, or overcoat in your list. Is your list for someone in Highschool?

Will be moving to Boston area sometime next year so trying to get a jump start to avoid a buying spree later

then i would still go with my initial thought:

- overcoat
- raincoat (trench, barbour, whatever you prefer)
- some sort of offseason coat (lether, car coat - something to wear when the overcoat is too heavy)

to me, that would seem to be the most minimal, versatile stock

If you don't need an overcoat, why would you need a peacoat? If it's not cold enough for an overcoat, is it really cold enough for a peacoat? They basically serve the same function, with the overcoat just being something more formal that would look appropriate with a suit.

So what's the best alternative to the classic trench when it comes to warmth + rain/snow protection?

I'd like to get a trench just worried that a Boston winter would render it useless unless I've got a warm coat under it

Calm down, old man. Isn't this thread based on opinion and need based on geography? Lurk more.
