Jacket Buttons On The Wrong Side?

I recently sold this Helmut Lang jacket in the B&S forum. On delivery, I got a not from the buyer saying that all was great...except it is a woman's jacket. This coat looks like a man's, is constructed like a man's and, my wife says, isn't like any woman's jacket she's ever had or seen. Obviously I refunded the buyer's money and now have the jacket in my possession. My question is...does anyone know of European designers putting the buttons on the opposite side on a man's coat? Here's the jacket.

This is a previously owned deep charcoal grey wool, 3-button jacket by Helmut Lang. It is tagged EU 44 and made in Italy, but please check the approximate measurements below, as it measures out to more like a US 36/37. There are no issues with the jacket. It is in excellent condition. SOLD

Approximate measurements: chest 20"
sleeves 23 3/4" +1 1/2"
shoulders 17 1/2"
length 28" from bottom of collar

The style of having the buttons on the opposite side is usually to identify it as a woman's jacket.

That HL jacket doesn't look like a woman's jacket - it might just have been a design choice. You shouldn't have refunded so hastily (caveat emptor)!

Jackets worn by some Orthodox Jews often have the buttons on the opposite side from most men's jackets. Because Jews weren't allowed to carry weapons back in the day, their coats buttoned this way in order to difficilitate the drawing of a weapon from the left hip by a right-handed man. Or so I hear. The tradition continues, in any case.

It is a men's jacket.

That was an HL designing practice some time ago

Have you noticed, also the lapel buttonhole is on the 'wrong' side.

It is not a design feature. I suppose, some operator muddled it up. The jacket is a reject.

44 is very small for a mans jacket.

Once I tried a pair of HL pants in which the buttoning was "reversed" i.e. men's pants with a women's buttoning closure.

You usualy see button that way on a womans coat, the cut of that looks like it's a mens. Just a tailoring flaw I guess.

It measures to 40" across the chest, which makes it closer to a EU 46, I believe.

40 would be closer to a 48. But it's tagged a 44. Some companies size baggy some on the other side of things.

I can give a theory. At one point women wore a look that was borrowed mens jackets. At some point designers started putting out womens jackets that looked like mens jackets. Remember these are supposed to be borrowed from the BF so are over sized.

Even Italian 46 aren't common in the US . 44 is rare even in Italy.

Maybe I'm missing something, but it looks from the pictures that the buttons are on the right side and button through the left? Isn't that the normal way for a man's jacket? All my coats are this way round...

I don't think those are pics of it buttoned up.
