Not the best pizza, just the best pan/deep dish. New York rules thin crust (which I, too, prefer over the other types). You're talking to a former New Yorker whose grandmother worked at an Italian restaurant upstate.

Pequod's brushes melted cheese along the edge of the crust to give it a unique, artery-clogging edge.

Not a buckeye by birth--came here for OSU. Ended up getting married..blah blah blah

Chicago Ron-- Nyc pizza is so different from the Chicago Deep Dish. It isn't even fair to compare them!!

I wasn't really comparing... I just think Morton Grove is way too far away.

Agreed for purposes of X's visit...Burt's does have a cultish following among Chicago foodies. Pequod's would be the most practicable place to go for deep dish if you're just here for a quick visit.

If your think people on this board argue passionately about, say, shoes, just start and argument with a Chicagoan about pizza. One of my best buddies is a native and he and I always disagree about pizza, especially crackery, cut-in-squares Chicago thin crust vs. NY style.

A buddy might be coming up with me. If so, we are going to do a Chicago Pizza Tour! He got a little defensive saying that he really does not understand how Gino's can be improved upon!

What places in Chicago do you recommend for the pie? Any style is fine...

  • Pequod's in Lincoln Park for deep dish;
  • Antico in Andersonville and Spacca Napoli in Ravenswood for authentic (or nearly authentic) Neopolitan thin crust;
  • Pizano's in the Loop or in the Gold Coast for Chicago-style thin crust (crackery crust, a round pie cut into squares);
  • Piece in Wicker Park, Coalfire in Ukranian Village or Great Lakes in Andersonville for East Coast style thin crust (pliable crust, cut in wedges; Piece also has a sub-specialty in New Haven style, i.e. Pecorino Romano cheese instead of mozzerella, marinara sauce); and
  • Chicago Pizza and Oven Grinder Company for its own form of stuffed pizza (baked in individual pie plates, then served upside-down).

Depending on where you're staying, you'll need to switch buses or trains in order to get to some of these places.

Just a friendly reminder to all my fellow Chicagoans that the sign-up/payment deadline for the Chicago meet-up is Friday, September 18th.

I am pleased to announce that both Joe Mapes of Balani Custom Clothiers in the Loop (http://balanicustom.com/about/history/) and Dwane Stover, Director of Midwest Sales for Oxxford Clothes (http://www.oxxfordclothes.com/), will be joining our meet-up on Thursday, September 24th. Joe and Dwane will speak about their respective firms and will be available to answer questions.

As previously mentioned, also joining us will be Paul Grangaard and Jim Kass, the CEO and Director of Manufacturing respectively for Allen Edmonds, and Skip and Nick Horween of premier cordovan tanners Horween Leather Company.

This surely will be an enjoyable time for Chicago sartorialists...and don't forget about the gift bags (cigars, coupons) from 316 Club Barber Spa.
