Hi,

This might be a stupid/beginner - or worse yet a redundant - question, but I was just wondering:

What are the rules of wearing cufflinks!?

I've only recently purchased my first dress shirts with french cuffs (1 white, 1 white/white textured, and 1 blue)

I'm in the process of building my cufflink collection and was just wondering what rules to follow when dressing up.

For example, for a wedding, I'm planning on wearing a black two button suit, with the white/white textured shirt, and I'm in the process of finding a tie and cufflinks...

Rule #1 - It is fine to wear cufflinks without a tie. Others will be here soon to ridicule this rule, FYI.

Traditionally, cufflinks are worn with suits. Wear less formal button cuffed shirts with odd jackets, and with tieless suits.

There are people who wear links without a tie, and even links without a jacket or tie, but it's wrong.

It's ok to wear french cuffs without a suit or even a jacket...don't listen to the nay-sayers.

One good rule is not to link your left cuff to your right cuff.

Or so I am told.

Witty....

Really just wondering about whether the colours of the cufflinks need to match any other part of the outfit like the pocket square, tie, shirt....

Trying to match your cufflinks with ties/belts/stripes in suits strikes me as a bit contrived.

Cufflinks can reflect individuality.. they can make a statement. They can express whimsy or a more staid, conservative statement.

Get what appeals to you.. what you like.. and wear them with pride and confidence.

I've worn french cuff shirts with links sans any tie or jacket, and it hardly looked doofus-esque. There's nothing wrong with wearing a links sans any tie or jacket. It's generally not done, but there certainly aren't any rules against it, unspoken or otherwise. For example, a jacquard maroon french cuff shirt and black wool slacks, along with some tassle-bit loafers? I hardly think that's a look to be laughed at.

I would only wear double sided cufflinks. All the other fastener type varieties look clumsy to me.

If you must wear them without a jacket, I would say go for as subtle as you possibly can, such as the knit ball ones. Flashy looking metallic ones without a jacket or tie look garish.

You cufflinks needn't match anything else in your outfit. However, some cufflinks are more formal than others.
