It's not just our system.  It's every single professional site you see out there.  We all use the same Ad-Dev technology, and the filters are all the same.  In a community like Styleforum, we just hear about it more.  On a news site, for example, this would never be reported.  In fact, for news sites, autoplay and automatic site takeover ads are the norm, and that goes for the big boys like the NYT.  I don't blame them either, though the ads are sorta annoying.  In this day and age, the big advertisers control the publishers even more than they did back in print days, because there are so many outlets available to them.  For a big publisher, you either work with advertisers to make the most palatable ads, or you go out or business.  Until the day that someone finds an alternative to advertising as the main source of revenue for "publishers", (which no one yet has), the balance of power will be skewed.

We already leave a ton of money on the table with what some ad people call our "unreasonable demands", but we can afford to do this precisely because we are a mom and pop shop, virtually speaking.

I just got one this very moment as I was going to post this (it was Dos Equis)

Is there a way to filter out and ban all ads that don't have the AdChoices functionality?

That's annoying.  Theoretically, yes, we could not use anything by adchoices, but that would cut our display ad revenue by about 1/2, so it's not really feasible.  adchoices is one of the lowest paying networks.  We have a cascade of them.  Some are really high end, and some are newer and not as well run.  Also, adchoices has had a ton of holes recently, and in fact, they were responsible for a bunch of malware ads before Christmas, because google, too, can be outsmarted (and bad players will target google because it has such a wide audience and so well trusted that everyone whitelists them.)

I assume your ad network is using back filler ads (supply chain management?). Maybe tell your ad network that you don't want back filler ads for the moment? Because if they're filling space with stuff from another network, they (and you) have less control over what pops up here.

FWIW, I've been getting video ads here for the past two or three weeks.

Video with audio?  We allow video with no audio.  It's not one ad network.  So, we use Wikia's ad system, which has relationships with a ton of ad networks, as well as directly sold ads.  So, it's usually unclear at first glance, without seeing the links, what ad network is the bad player, and whether it's their back fill ads.

In this case, however, it seems like premium ads got mis categorized.  Dos Equis, Axe, Hotels.com, etc.. are premium advertisers.  We already have a pretty strict filter on the low quality backfill ads, and really only use pretty reputable ad networks, which is why, unlike a lot of sites, you won't see any "late night chat" or those really garish payday kloans ads, or whatever.  Instead, you'll get served up a boring adsense text ad, which is probably what you see after an extensive amount of browsing.  With the Dos Equis, or whatever, those ads would appear first (no idea about Axe), since those are the highest paying ads.

In this case, it's like some of the highest paying ads got through our filter.  I would be pretty sure that it's the ad network, not the advertiser's fault, since the premium advertisers tend to play very nicely.

Anyway, I'm (we're) on it.  Please email me at styleforum.net@gmail.com with any more comments or reports.  I'd like to get this thread back to fashion or food, or whatever else we talk about.

Cheers,

Fok.

I don't think either wool or cashmere will be affected by a cold-water soak with no agitation (just imagine you were stuck in a heavy downpour for eight hours!). Things get trickier if they're lined with something like viscose

No lining!

yeah i'm fairly confident you'll be find cold washing it. you can even throw it in the dryer for a little bit to get out the dampness without causing shrinkage.

Ok but why are we missing out on those very important penis enlargment ads and make 100,000$ from home doing nothing ads? My small penis and miserable bank account are waiting for SF help.

ricky's fish tacos is really good in east hollywood, raffi's is ok for persian food if you go up to glendale

mowhawk general is more impressive online than in person and their Dries buy was embarrassing and maxfield's is a waste of concrete although the small selection of yohji i got to try on made it less of a wasted outing

Well, the pullups I can do, but I want to fix the things that @Fuuma mentioned before moving onto beezies.

The ads are targeted based on your search history, so what have you been looking at.
