No. It means that the retailer makes less.

That doesn't compute. If the retail price of the item is about the same (and I'm pretty sure it is, Japanese retail prices aren't lower are they?), and the US markup over wholesale is almost double the Japanese, that means the designer is making a much larger chunk of the profit, compared to a European designer. Unless I'm missing something?

What LA Guy is saying is that the items already have a predetermined retail price and what the store pays for it gives them an 80% margin. The stores in the west pay the same price but need to charge the customers more to account for extra costs and a different customer behaviour.

Not quite what I meant, though this is what he was saying for Japanese items. Let's say item A, made by, I dunno, Attachment, costs $300 retail in Japan. Item B, by whoever, Rick Owens, costs $300 retail in New York. Item A has an 80% margin, so the designer takes home $167. Item B, with the same retail price, has a 130% margin, so the designer takes home $130. I'm not talking about imports here, but stuff sold in the same country - it looks like Japan is a much better environment for designers / manufacturers?

I wouldn't assume that is the case, in this example the production costs of the Rick Owens item would probably be significantly less.

should I get casual khakis hemmed with a cuff or plain?

Trad would be to cuff but I like having some plain hems, plus they're easier to wash and wear--cuffs sometimes get funky when washed/dried. I doubt your hems will be small enough to leave long and stack.

That closet thread really exemplifies how SW&D has changed over the last two or three years. Guys such as shoreman, PP, and zissou are still with the same aesthetic, but there's a noticeable absence of pretty much every piece of clothing or footwear that's been praised in SW&D over the last 12-18 months.
Other than that, I'm still laughing at Drew's closet looking like someone got suplexed into it.

Good thread. My closets are a ridiculous mess right now. Most of the stuff in those photos I still wear (NDG sweater like once a week) but it doesn't seem worth posting WAYWTs. Couple pieces I've sold. The only thing I see there that I don't really wear anymore at all are the spread collar dress shirts and western shirts.

Re: retail prices, it seems weird to me that the origin/exporting designer company whatever expects the importer to adjust to their way of doing business. It would seem to me that if I want to do business in Italy, I"d have to take their method of pricing or whatever into account to make it work. This is mostly me bitching about prices.

I've seen this circulating on Tumblr among people who appear to fund their jawnz hobby with mom and dad's bank account. I suppose they could wear the jacket ironically.

It's Wacko Maria, if you couldn't tell by the "guilty parties" bit.

I think it's kind of funny, but won't ever really feel "authentic"

I don't know, I think clothing with English text really only works if you're in an area where it's not really spoken or written. Otherwise it's like "hey read this message on my body. I'm explicitly giving you a reason to look at me and pay attention to me longer than you normally would have"

I figured it was a reference to something, but it would still seem ironic for most people to wear it. Agreed on the English text, too. I think it's a cool jacket, but when you get down to it, it's not terribly different than the message/graphic tees most of us rake over the coals.

The only way to make something like that work is usually to do it yourself, otherwise it just seems fake. I really want to find somebody that screenprints since I always have ideas for tees I want made.

random thought: motherfuckers popping off on an ebay auction with days to go, doing nothing but driving the price up for the eventual winners.
