Going to the Tailor, First Time (NJ)

I'm planning on going to the tailor for the first time to get a denim jacket I just purchased a bit more fitted. I've never been to the tailor before so I have a few questions.

1.) Would they be able to tailor a denim jacket?
2.) How much would this alteration cost approximately?
3.) Do you tip tailors?
4.) Any recommended tailors in the northern New Jersey area?

Cheers to all responses!

1. they should be able to.
2. depends on how much alteration you need.
3. I never do, but then again I've never been to one that I absolutely love.
4. nope.

One bit of advice is, if he/she doesn't want to take the time to do what you want them to do, then by all means don't give them your jacket. I had a tailor tell me last week that 'people should just buy the right sized clothes to begin with'. Not exactly a good sign!

Ha ha, why would a tailor say that? Doesn't he want any business?

That's exactly what I thought. He was an 80-year old Italian guy. Maybe he needs to retire.

know exactly what you want when you go to a tailor. measurements hellp. You can't really trust a tailor to pass judgment for you.

really? Shouldn't a good tailor be able to fit you well? I thought that was the whole point of seeing a tailor.

Both of these should be taken in to account, not one or the other.

In any case, you never forgot your first.

Just make sure he doesn't have roaming hands.

You can bring in pants to them. And say, okay I want to hem these pants. They will automatically hem it to a "safe" and normal length. (Probably one break). Some people want no break. When I have them taper my jeans I give them exact measurements for the knee and leg opening because I generally like it slimmer than what they would do.

In other words, trust your tailor (if he's any good) but trust your own judgement as well.

Exactly. You might have to shop around though until you find the right one who does the utmost quality jobs to your liking or unless you get really lucky. But yeah, once you find the right tailor, it is a godsend. It's almost become an addiction for me because anything that I buy where I have little issues with; off it goes to my tailor, haha.

Yeah, I've found it's like going to a barber/hairdresser- if you want something drastic, they'll go about halfway to play it safe. Most of them need extra encouragement.
