Is it okay to wear a heavy duty wool sport coat over a suit?

During colder weather, when I don't feel like wearing my pea coat or overcoat, is it okay to wear a heavier duty wool sport coat over a normal suit?

Really? Excuse my ignorance, but a sport coat really can't be used as a coat in the traditional sense?

A sportcoat over a suit jacket just doesnt work. It's like wearing two blazers, it just isnt done.

I do love that sportcoat, anyone have any experiences with Harris Tweed? That is a great price for what looks like a quality sportcoat.

I think you're letting the semantics get in your way. A suit coat is a "coat" too but you wouldn't wear it over another one. Tweed topcoats are probably the closest thing to what you're describing. It's a mid weight fabric, much like a sportcoat, but longer. It is to be worn over a suit or sportcoat.

I think it would generally look odd. Plus, unless the heavier coat fits very poorly when worn on its own, I can't imagine there being enough room in the shoulders to get it over a different coat.

If you're not going to be outside too long, I'd go the scarf/hat/gloves with just the suit look. I actually like it a fair amount. if you are going to be, I'd bust out the overcoat.

I concur. This doesn't sound like it makes any sense at all. Wouldn't the sport coat have to be at least a size larger to fit over the suit coat, making it too big to wear on its own, making it more sensible to just get a top coat or other traditional outerwear to wear over your suit?

Wait for it to go on sale. I got this one in Glasgow for 90 quid.
