Hey SF,

I just bought a great pair of Nudie Average Joe Raw Black Selvedge. They are dyed using a sulfur dye. The smell of these jeans, while not overpowering, is kind of annoying. I love the jeans and I love the fit, but I was wondering what I should do to try to get rid of the smell. I'm thinking 1 wash would be ok but obviously being raw I want to use these to get some decent fades. I hope that the 1 wash wouldn't harm that process too much. Anyone have any bright ideas? Should I just soak them, or full wash?

This would be my first wash of any of my raw jeans. I have a pair of APC Rescues that I bought from Mauro, and a pair of Ande Whall cougars. The Rescues are about 6 months old and the AW's are about 4 months. The rescues are almost ready for a wash, and the AW's are about 3 months away or so. THANKS AGAIN FOR YOUR HELP!

nudies are notorious for having poor dye retaining qualities, but i dont know much about sulfer dyed stuff, i would maybe soak them and add fragrances or scents to the water

i once had a pair of cords that smelled like sulfur. what i did was wash them with about a cup of baking soda and the smell mostly went away. I washed them again with baking soda and the smell went completely away after that wash.

I've washed mine twice to try and get rid of them smell and it is still there. Febreeze helps a little but the smell always comes back. In my opinion, I would return them if you can't stand it.

Yeah I washed mine last night. The smell is there and probably worse than before. I'm not going to return them. I'm thinking that I'll wear them around the house for a little while and beat them up. Try to febreeze them and mask the smell a little bit. I like the jeans, the fit is good for me and I think that given the chance they could fade really nicely. I put some great stacks on the back of the knees after the wash. Any other suggestions from anyone? Thanks for the input so far!

I have the AJ Black Selvedge, and have washed them two times. I kinda wanted to retain the dark black so didn't mind the lack of intense fading. But you should know that the smell, while fainter, is still there. It doesn't really both me though.

Thats ok, I just don't want it to be overpowering. I'm sure eventually that smell will fade away, but I just have to work around it a bit. How long have you had yours? Did they fade at all? I saw some great pics of samauri black jeans and how they came out and I was inspired. I know that nudies aren't samauris, but they were a great deal and not a bad jean.

I got mine in November. I wasn't super concerned with the fading details. I already have some other raw jeans that I have achieved those effects with. Also, I should have probably gone down a size, so I washed mine after a week to shrink them down. I have only washed them once since and have done a little bit of hand-sanding to get some whiskering. I personally like true black jeans as long as they fit okay. For me, after the first wash, the 'raw' look of the denim faded. They became more true black throughout, if that makes since. This is likely due to the fact that I washed them without much wear before.

Yeah they weren't as shiny, but they are definately stiff. I'm sure i could restarch them but I'm just going to wear them as is. I'm hoping for a good faded look, but I'm not sure if they will achieve that. They are a good fit but aren't snug. So the good fade lines probably won't happen. We'll see how they work out. THANKS FOR THE INPUT!

Put a few dryer sheets in the back pockets, or febreeze. The dryer sheets will keep mosquitoes away (even though in January this probably has yet to become a problem).

According to Valet, a mixture of two parts water to one part Vodka gets rid of the musty smell on vintage clothing. If it can get rid of that horrendousness, it might work for your sulfur problem.

my J Crew black rinse selvage also have this issue. A big Febreeze treatment and a dry cleaning trip still hasn't gotten rid of it 100%

Robbie I was hoping for some sort of Coke remedy! I know it peels paint off of cars and other things, I was thinking maybe a coke bath for the jeans. LOL. BTW great fade on your KMWs, keep up the good work!
