Spirits wise -- a bottle of the boutique Junipero Gin, Mandarin Napoleon, and a supposedly half-decent Calvados, plus a few bottles of mixing grade spirit to restock. I kept to my word and did not buy any Scotch (even though the Syrah aged Mortlach was tempting me, as was an older Littlemill and a Cragganmore 29).

Wine-wise, I grabbed twenty-five or so bottles and am pretty much stocked to capacity (plans for the cellar are underway). Notable were a decent Chateauneuf, Pouilly-Fuisse, Montrachet, some Alsatian and Pfalz Riesling, and 2001 Sauternes from Guirard and DesFargues.

I enjoy Zins as well, and have had that wine some years ago. I recall that I enjoyed it -- picked up a pair today as well, and '05 and an '04. We should compare when the time comes.

We heard a new store opened recently on the other side of town and plan to explore it next weekend. I doubt we will purchase 25 bottles, but I hope to make a few buys. I also just ordered a three pack of Syrah and a three pack of "Haut Tubbee", or hot tub, wine from Stefania Wine ( www.stefaniawine.com ) and that should be shipping in soon.

The Haut Tubbee is funny. It is named in honor of the first 50 vines the couple planted...by their hot tub. I highly recommend their Uvas Creek Cab Sab. The sad thing is, it never hit the stores and is all sold out. I got three bottles though

The day that my collection begins to look like either of yours in the slightest is the day that I will feel as if I've finally "made it" and am now a man.

Ugh, you're telling me. Can you say Jagahhhhbombs? I normally drink stuff I like the taste of, which puts a hurtin on my wallet. This weekend, with friends, I gave my wallet the night off and put a hurtin on my liver.
It's all about balance, really.

I just picked up a six of Spaten Optimator and a six of Xingu Black.

Probably my two favorite beers and definitely the perfect examples of the saying, "Remember, beer has food value but food has no beer value."

Really, really good. It's not nearly as heavy of a beer as it looks like it would be, because it looks like you'd be drinking a loaf of pumpernikle. For example, I was at a bar on wednesday and ordered one and when I poured it into the glass i realized how dark it really was (despite having been drinking it from glasses for better than a year).

I held it up to one of the bar lights and the only light I could see through it was a red ring of light right at the bottom of the glass.

It's full bodied, but incredibly smooth to drink. It has a nice molasses aroma off the head but doesn't have a huge up front flavor; I get a hint of licorice but nothing major. It's a beer that you really appreciate as you swallow it.

For drinking smoothness/quality I'd compare it to a heavy lager like a bock. Taste wise it has more of an ale like taste, but without the up front hoppiness most ales have.

Best thing to do is just try one but please don't drink it out of the bottle. You really need to get the aroma off of the beer to get the full flavor spectrum.

To revive this thread... I already have half a bottle of this stuff (can you have too much?), but the bottle was cool enough for me to pick up another 900ml:

Three bottles of Spatlese, and (beer drinkers, I'm paying attention to ya) two bottles of Chimay Blue (one is a gift), one bottle of Chimay white, one bottle of Three Philosophers, and a bottle of (non-Lindemans) Kriek.

^^That is a nice haul.

For Memorial Day Weekend, picked up a bottle of Woodford Reserve, Knob Creek, and some Bombay Sapphire.

^^ As is that. You need to buy some sweet vermouth and make some Manhattans with all that bourbon. And mint juleps. And Old-Fashioneds. And and and.

*Kwilk's mouth waters*

Any suggestions on a good sweet vermouth? I'm sure it's been answered elsewhere ad nauseam, but I feel that the food&drink subforum is the one sacred place left on SF where you can ask a question without being bombarded for not using the search button, and I plan to take advantage of that.

FWIW, your moratorium could last 5 years, and I'd still not have close to the collection you have.
