lawyerdad, as I have noted to myself before, you have darn good taste! Keep the Aspidistra Flying is a wonderfully engaging and humane novel that I can't urge people to read strongly enough. There's much more to Orwell beyond the "greatest hits."

Yevgeny Zamyatin's We. I think it is more a question of influence (I can't recall whether acknowledged or not) than actual rip-off.

Well. sure, it all depends who you want to read about. What sorts of lives engage you?

A stupendously good biography I read recently was Valerie Boyd's Wrapped in Rainbows: The Life of Zora Neale Hurston. Hurston is a great subject to whom Boyd has done full justice. A marvelous read.

Benjamin J Kaplan, Divided by Faith: Religious Conflict and the Practice of Toleration in Early Modern Europe. It's well-written (as opposed to ponderously academic) and fascinating. Definitely worth checking out by the history buffs among us.

William Ian Miller, The Anatomy of Disgust. Parts of this book are, like the subject matter, disgusting, but most of it is extremely insightful and witty.

Good to know. Animal Farm is probably one of my favorite read ever. Will check out Keep the Aspidistra Flying when I have the time and inclination.

Read this at Cal. Amusing at times, but definitely a lesser work.

As for me, still meandering through the Palliser series, now into Phineas Redux.

As soon as I finish Dickens's Martin Chuzzlewit -- I'm about a hundred pages from the end -- my "Victorian novel" slot will be occupied by Can You Forgive Her?, the first in the Palliser series. I'm looking forward to it.

Manton, when you finish the Palliser novels, I highly recommend Trollope's Orley Farm if you haven't read it yet.
