Isn't the situation we're talking about technically about potential authenticity; the seller claiming they were Dolce and Gabbana when in reality they were D&G?

Actually, in a communist country people would suppress price information so their neighbors would pay the same high prices, just as they did. It's all about equality of misery.

I saw that J had posted on there, but is that kind of thing frowned upon? Yeah, I realize that the first post about eBay was not right to do, but the rest of us were making good points, except for my stupid comment about the guy who's a mod on another forum.

On one hand, we were probably making his stuff look bad. On the other hand, we kept it up at the top for like 4 hours, which in the B&S thread is like 6 weeks.

My worthless opinion is pretty much the same as mat's and dopey's. With the exception of the "try ebay" comment, I thought useful information was being posted (and that ospreyguy was being moderately db-y in his comments, but whatever). Comments that clarify issues relating to multiple lines of products within a general corporate structure (DG, Polo, Armani, Isaia, whatever) seem relevant, helpful, and factual -- regardless of whether the seller is trying to be cagy or is just ignorant. So is existing, actual price comparison information.

I'm not the least bit persuaded by EL72's "slippery slope" argument. I think the line between saying "You know, Isaia and Gianluci are actually two separate product lines" and saying "those are fugly, go hawk them to the idiots on ebay" is not hard to discern.

To be clear, I am not referring to that specific thread or to clarifying issues of Isaia vs. Gianluca... but to the general idea suggested by m@t:

Nornally a well intentioned seller will come back and say 'no, that link is the non selvege version, mine are selvege ergo pay up", and in the end the thread has had a bump to the top through legitimate discourse. If the seller was trying to rip people off, then he has been called out, and has to respond accordingly.

I see. Thanks for the clarification. I come down in the same place, but that's definitely a closer issue.

So then I ask again: If I choose to offer something for sale for $300 that is available elsewhere for $200, is it acceptable for others to post in my thread that my price is not the best one on the Internet (or elsewhere for that matter)?

IMO it is acceptable. What do you think 90% of the eBay shoe thread is?

Would it be more acceptable to you if I just posted an entirely new thread above yours showing where you could get the same product cheaper?

My meaningless opinion is that it should be ok to post a link or other concrete information for comparison purposes. I think the value that adds to the forum as an informational resource is worth any potential consusion/disputes (the possibility of which I recognize).
