Guitars... Another expensive hobby

I think you would do better with that than most anything I've ever seen for sale for $500, especially for your preferred sound. I think I paid around $550 for mine in 1999, so it seems like they hold their value well.

I'm late to the party but agree - that DM-10 is a nice deal. Did you get it?

That guitar looks to be a lot more expensive than the listed $500 with the repairs they recommend getting on it.

Shoremen- Have you been to Atomic Music down in Beltsville/College Park? I'd guess you might find a nice used SG there, and the atmosphere is a lot more tolerable than Guitar Center type stores. Obviously get an idea of what they're going for on ebay first, but I've gotten some deals with trading equipment and bargaining with Atomic in the past.

Yes jkennett, you're totally right. A neck reset could cost $150-200, and should only be performed by an authorized Martin repair person. The dealer, Elderly Instruments, is very reputable, so they make sure to offer a detailed disclosure about instruments they sell. The way the description reads, it looks like the guitar is on the verge of needing a neck reset, but is probably ok (at least for some people) to play for now, but not ideal. It's really difficult to be sure unless you examine the guitar in person.

This really goes back to my earlier post where I said it is unlikely to find a "deep and jangly sounding" guitar with no problems for under $1500. Actually there are plenty of ones with problems selling for way more than $1500.

Martin guitars are notorious for needing neck resets and developing cracks, especially around the pickguard. If they didn't sound so good, I doubt people would put up with it.

Actually, I posted this as an example. Maybe the OP could find one of these Martin Shenadoahs closer to him so he could try one. One in great condition might sell for $650-700 (which is pretty close to what they sold for new in the 80's-90's)

So, you want a guitar.

for an electric, Get a Fender Stratocaster, American Deluxe is good. a vintage 50's one is better.
for an acoustic, Get a Martin OM-28
for a jazz guitar, get a 50's Gibson ES-175
for classical, get a Ramirez.


I have been a player and collector for many years until I got fed of guitars and playing and sold them all.

At some point I had 16 vintage guitars including a 52 ES-175, a 57 ES-175 a 60 ES-345, an L-5, some strats, a few acoustics including Martin OM-28 and Gibson J-200, 3 Les Pauls etc etc....

Some of those guitars costs more than $5000, and I am not mentioning the amps, pedals and stuff.

Yes It is an expensive hobby.

I gave up guitar, because after all the practice I still sucked and I spent most of my nights between drogued and drunk broke musicians.

So I picked up bass and started to play Salsa music and my musical life changed. I wasn't anymore playing for some 10 gloomy drunks on a bar but to a crowd plenty of hot chicks dancing.

After a while I just stopped playing and joined the crowd ( and the hot chicks ) dancing.

Now I only go dancing and are the most happy ex-musician you have ever seen
