Do you prefer jeans w/sneakers or jeans w/dress shoes?

I agree with Alan, I always try to dress "nice" whenever I can so mostly dress shoes...

Dress shoes look good with jeans if they're heavier, like double soled longwing brogues. "Country" shoes (like Trickers) are good with denim for the same reason.

I don't think you can wear denim with a shoe like most Edward Greens, for example. Sure *you* might think it looks good and it works, but it really doesnt.

I think a lot of it depends on the cut and weight of the jeans. To my eyes, a lot of WAYWT posters show that certain sleeker dress shoes or boots can and do work with jeans.

I wear everything from chucks to chukkas to boots to dress shoes with different pairs of jeans, depending on my mood, the occasion, the weather, and what shirts are clean. That said, there are some dress shoes that are not likely to work for me or anyone.

I don't own any sneakers. I think Get Smart's answer is spot on. Jeans work like tweed I think.

I have friends who wear a button shirt over a sweater, jeans
and then sneakers...

I've tried the same and it seems okay, but if you were to put on say
a blazer...it seems a little more difficult to pull off.

So I go the dress shoe route if a blazer comes into the equation.

Jeans with boots: Chelseas or chukkas 60%
Jeans with country shoes: brogues or double sole wingtip: 20%
Jeans with sneakers: Purcells, Chucks or Stan Smiths. 20%

Refined/slim dress shoes are for proper trousers IMO.

I wear tappered jeans and pair them with:

-Hi-top sneakers (say Adidas Peter Saville)
-Sleek boots and shoes (chelseas or pointy blutchers)
-More rugged/designer boots (Poell, CDiem)

So I guess I run the whole gamut. I sort of rediscovered my nicely faded new standards a few days ago, uncuffed them and been mostly wearing these. I don't really pair my jeans with the kind of shoes the menswear guy prefer (elegant, traditional shoes), I kinda looks like wearing sneakers with a suit to me.

I don't prefer one over the other. They are two different looks for two different situations. To me it is clear which is which.

Despite being in high school and having no one else do it at all, sometimes I wear dress shoes with jeans. Mostly it's because if I'm wearing something nicer like a sweater or a peacoat I feel weird in sneakers.

jeans with boots is my favorite combination. the dress shoe thing is a bit trickier to pull, i'm fine with jeans & plain toe oxfords but any other dress shoe (e.g. brogue, etc.) i am not as sure of. The best sneaker to go with jeans IMO is converse high top, but Dior Homme circa 2004, Martin Margiela, and Lanvin make some good sneakers that will go fine with denim. I think the key is to find a sneaker with clean lines and subtle, if not minimal detailing. Most sneakers these days look either too fashiony (like those Dolce & Gabbana gold/silver shoes with wacky prints) or too athletic (e.g. the running shoes seinfeld wore with his jeans)

this makes a lot of sense and actually solves my dress shoe/jean confusion. Well said.

Prefer boots with most of my jeans, for a casual look I wear Red Wing or Indys, for a dressier look, I prefer RM Williams.
Dress shoes that look good tend to be ones that are a little casual like shell or suede.
I wear sneakers only during the summer with summer;lighter jeans

I like jeans with high top sneakers, like the shoes Kanye was wearing at the Grammys.
