If you have nice clothes, do you need a nice car?

Personally I've found it interesting that a man can be average in dress but drive a vintage Mercedes and look like a million bucks. Anyone else experience this phenomenon?

If I ever get in the poor house I'm going to buy a used Mercedes.

I would have to agree w/balance.

If you have a 5000 dollar suit w/a 5000 car...there's no balance.
If you have 50,000 car and a 500/suit...no balance.

I can't do that (yet).

Buy a used Jaguar, you'll get there in style.

I don't think there's any balancing test to it. Live within your means and look presentable. You don't need to spend a lot of money to do so unless you really want to.

I used to see more of these on the road. I suppose time has taken its toll.

A vintage 911 Porsche is cool too.

I'd much prefer one of these-

I currently drive a 2003 Ford Explorer; it's not glamorous but neither is anything that I use it for so I see no purpose in having a car I can't do much with. An XJ would be nice but I usually carry an array of stuff around with me (camera backpack, firefighting gear, briefcase). It would be a game of Tetris trying to fit all that into a Jag.

If I had my choice I'd have both cars because there are times where I wish a had a nice old convertible to cruise around in

I would love to drive a luxury car, but Tiberias is quite right in everything he says. A car is the only purchase of that magnitude that loses half its value the minute you buy it. Education is an investment that continues its payoff forever; houses, other real estate, stocks and other investments, wisely chosen, can appreciate in value handsomely. Cars don't appreciate. In fact nothing depreciates faster.

And yet it is my impression, based on a scan of ads in the Wall Street Journal, Forbes, and so on, that executives and executive wannabes spend a huge amount of time thinking about cars, some time thinking about watches, and precious little time thinking about clothing. We're the anomalies here at this board.
